Anyone using a steel bander
What size band do you use for timber.
12.5, 16 or 19mm?
Thanks

Hi Bob, I use 16. Don't go 13 as the strapping alway brakes. Sometimes when you are strapping timber up it brakes or when you move packs of timber it can brake. Only know this as last time I went to get my 16mm strapping from my supplier they had only 13 in stock. Battled with it for a month then went back for the right size.
If you have any timber you don't want pinched by the strapping on the edges you can get steel corner plates that work excellent.

Have been using 12.5mm for years and also 16mm for big stuff. The 12.5 is ok if not over tensioned. Biggest problem with steel strap is rust stain.

I use 19mm from signet, All cost around $330 with 50m of 19mm.Ye the zinc coated band leaves rust stain. The black one we used to use at the green mill dosent have this problem.

I thought about using several different kinds of strapping but can't really justify this. I want to be able to strap everything from a small pack of timber to all the slabs from a single 40" log with the one type of strap so we're just going with the 19 mm for everything.

Use 19mm mate, nothing else. Be prepared to buy in bulk to save money, say 5 rolls at a time. I use Heatleys here down south

i use 1/2" strap, one at each end of a 1m3 pack is all that is needed to hold it together, even when lifting with crane truck (tends to buckle packs as the straps sag and used to snap plastic strap). only time it breaks is when i slide a pack of teh side of the trailer and drop it onto the ground.
even then it dosent always.

the big mills use all 19 mm doesnt need to be gal but is easy to handle and strong always use bearers and good strap tensioners and bearers underneath and steel corner clips for the top corners you will be right with this combo mate
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.
