Wa blackbutt
As part of our kitchen renovations I went down to a Blackbutt that I had felled a couple of years ago that had decided its time had come to an end [naturally ] . I`m looking for a top for the island bench, a nice contrasting timber to all the Jarrah and Sheoak. The first 3 m of the trunk 700 - 800 mm ,I`ve cut all the top branches and moving the main trunk into a better position for milling. the pics are from a 300 mm branch that I was keen to see what the grain looked like. What comes out of the the main piece might be different but this could be a good sign.I`ll have to mill it soon to get it out of the winter rains , all the bark has fallen off and also the white ants find it a tasty meal.

Moved the log and prepared for the first cut , spent most of the day charging the battery to the tractor and servicing after 6 months in the shed. also cut another piece 400 mm a bit further down the trunk , looks like it still has a bit of moisture in it so there could be some drying time , that`s OK as I still have to lay the tiles and build some more smaller cupboards

Beautiful! I'm keen to see how the big slabs turn out!
Looks like you're using a chainsaw mill setup? Could you share any details?

Nothing fancy, just a Westford system with a magnum 660 and a 3 ft blade.
Manage to get 7 slabs at 40mm , all stacked in the shed drying what little moisture that was still there, just in time too , today it`s blowing a gale and ..ssing down. the bench top I have in mind will be just over 800 mm wide so I`ll have to join two of them , but plenty to choose from.
