I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

I'm appalled at all the crap that went on in that thread. Tpyos happen.

Watson, I think that thread should be deleted. It's a dreadful reflection on an otherwise fabulous forum.

I also think that the rude buggers should have been told as much by the moderators, and it's not too late.

"Bring back the Biff"? Really? O gawd, I thought those attitudes were slowly changing in this country.

FenceFurniture, I don't agree with deleting the thread I think if we 'hide' the bad stuff, then we are destined to make those mistakes again, just having that thread on the forum to be able to refer to and give insight is priceless in itself.

I recall a thread a very long time ago, where Carl posted about timber propeties during milling, he was explaining how a log 'moves' while sawn on a lucas and he got slammed for his spelling, and how he explained stuff. He has put up with crud like that for a pretty long time.

I'm not localising things to Carl either, I don't know of specifics for others, but I had a chap PM me all but demanding I change my signature line about having 2 Lucas mills, he even thought he'd PM'd me about it once already and was sending a second wanting to know why I hadn't changed it I ended up changing it when I sold my other mill, but this guy I didn't even recall commenting on posts in the milling forum, just felt he was some kind of grammer police or some such nonsense.
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

I just re-read over that flooded gum thread - its appaling!!
it just seems like regardless of how much support there was for the crap to stop it was allowed to continue

I personally know Carls circumstances haven't changed, he left 'cause of crap he kept gettin dished on him, he is now a regular contributor to another off shore forum "shame, shame shame!!"
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Sigidi, take your point. I just think that bad behaviour should not be put on display, as it can encourage others to do the same because they think (or know) they'll get away with it.

One of the big reasons that I like this forum SO much is that there is very little of that shight going on. In fact that's the first I've seen. I've only been a member for six months but I've done an enormous amount of reading.

I believe that the moderators should have given a warning to the perpetrator, and if another sarcastic comment was made then a reduction in privileges.

    Points to make:
For whatever reason, not everyone is a good speller
Not everyone could be bothered right clicking on a red underlined word for autocorrect (or knows that it can be done)
Not everyone is good with figures/maths
Even people who can spell make tpyos (I'm forever correcting my typing, but I kan spell)
What if some person is excellent at what they do, and happens to be dyslexic? They don't even see the mistakes to be able to correct them.

In my former profession as an Industrial & Commercial photographer I had to be able to deal with people from the CEO through to the shop floor, and I adjusted my behaviour and language accordingly. It's easy to do. However I did get very tired of the "didn't know it was raining" EVERY time I got my brolleys out. Even more tiring was "are we gunna get some chicky-babes to hang off the machines?", but these things have to be taken in stride. My usual response was "hey, that's good, I've never heard that before!". A fella once said to me that I "should have tooken it over there". It just cracked me up, and has stayed with me for 20 years.

The real point is that regardless of a person's formal education and ability to spell, calculate etc, they will be good at something, and it seems to me that Carl is pretty good at pushing trees over, and should NOT be blasted by some sarcastic sod(s) for other shortcomings. We all have shortcomings. The main perpetrator's glaringly obvious shortcoming is not knowing how to behave in a socially acceptable way. I think I'd rather be a poor speller.

As for the "bring back the biff" quip, I can only assume that it was meant that way, in the absence of an emoticon to show tongue in cheek.

Where a question of safety arises it deserves to be challenged. Not only for the member involved but also for the benefit of other readers, both now and in the future.

Any topic is open to question and debate and these forums will not put a stop to that.

What is in question here is the manner in which people choose to debate. Taking issues to a personal level does nothing for the education of members and certainly restricts the free exchange of information once it begins.

The simple solution, and one mentioned time and again, is to "play the ball and not the man". In simple terms, ignore the personal comments and discuss the facts.

Quite right Groggy, on all counts. I do however think that when it gets to the point of "Texx, it's a real shame that" (indeed, even before this point) which was clearly deeply sarcastic, then it's time for the parents to step in. If #### & #### & #### & #### are banned, then so should that kind of thing.

At the moment, like any uncastigated naughty child, the main perpetrator has been granted licence to continue with socially unacceptable behaviour.

I suppose I should point out that I wasn't part of the original thread, and only came across this because of the petition.

Well one thing I have have noticed.
There is never any new threads about timber being cut anymore, I used to enjoy coming to this part of the forum and checking out the pics.
Just doesnt seem to happen anymore.

And that IS a real shame.

You can always post a new thread & start the ball rolling then .

"bring back the biff" is what any body with goolies would say to someone advocating violence as a way to solve a discussion.

Is this a petition where only the " for " comments are posted & the " against " are censored out?

    regards inter

Hello folks, i'm back(especially Sigidi, as i love my Lucas too).
Just had 6 months off with with no phones,24/7 and stress etc, has been fantastic.
Get a new job, get a new e-mail, log straight onto your favourite web site and what do you find? Un-needed people bashing, pretty disappointed.
I have read most of this thread and went back to the thread that "started this topic of discussion" and thought some of the garbage going on by certain people is not neccesary.
I would like to change the subject and talk about something else if possible, so how about ---- Bulldozers.
I have been associated with large trucks and bulldozers all of my working life and think they are probably not a bad topic to talk about.
Caterpillar is by far the biggest manufacturer in the world with something like 85% of the world market.
The rest is shared by people such as Komatsu,Dresser as such.
Probably the worst bulldozer ever built would have to be the INTERnational TD6.
The INTERnational TD6 would be a pain in the %^$$ from the minute you tried to start it the morning till the time you walked away from it in disgust (know someone in that situation).
I would nearly reckon that the INTERnational TD6 would be the worst dozer ever built and you would do yourself a favour to not even acknowledge you ever were associated with one of these pieces of snot.
Unless some one wants to talk horsepower and rimpull etc, probably not much more to say other than the fact that a couple of things are sure to happen.

Death, taxes and one day i will meet Carl and Allan over a beer because some of the knowledge these guys try to share with with the world is invaluable.

Secondly, i have included figures and quite possibly spelling mistakes this reply, so i will most likely be BULLDOZED for that.
Does not really worry me though as i have learnt to ignore idiots and people who think thay are over and above everyone else(still only talking about bulldozers eh).
Carl,if you are ever in the Hunter Valley, always welcome in my shed.

What a fantastic story, it takes me back to the things children would come out with in a school yard while playing with toy bulldozers, before they grow up & become intellectually sound.

glad i have a fiat 50CI , you never mentioned my old girl .
course she has been out of action for a few years only cos i am to lazy to fix her up ( i have bought the parts though )
and carl is a lot like a few of my good mates here where i live , seat of the pants and have a go bloke , like old mate of mine here ted 89 years old and been a miller all his life crikey he has some stories to tell i can tell you some of the things these old millers and log cutter carters did .he started at age 13 as a chock boy on the logging trail near comera /tamborine mountain area .
how many of you guys know what a chock boy was back then , i have listened to teds yarns for hours on end .
another old feller ( dickie )i was working with only a few days ago on the fence line at work , he started logging before the chainsaws landed here then when they did and his boss told him he had to use one instead of the axe he hated it cos it slowed him down he said he got behind in his logs and kept swapping back to the axe for the fist few months so he could get his load count back up .and ted tells me dickie was a bit slower than him cos he could only cut right handed with the axe and had to keep walking around the tree but ted cut both handed and cut the tree down from the one spot .
i have teds first stihl lightning .
getting off the topic here better shut up ,i am probably in trouble anyway .
