Default The ‘usual list of suspects’ do Wood Dust

You are probably all aware of the inaugural Wood Dust event currently happening at Canberra and Bungendore. Basically it is a unique event involving
    • theatre-based interviews and panels with noted International and Australian furniture makers and toolmkaers
    • master classes with most of the same famous woodworkers AND
    • a 2 day market and woodworking orgy on Saturday and Sunday!

The usual list of suspects (this time consisting of Groeneaj, Shanesmith80, FenceFurniture and myself) drove down to Canberra on Thursday to attend the TOOLMAKERS chat session at the Q Theatre that night however, we arrived early enough to first visit Thor’s Hammer, a fabulous palace of recycled timber and furniture making currently located in the historic Yarralumla Brickworks site. They are moving before. hristmas but are definitely worth a visit NOW...

    ECE2134F-8EF4-461A-B0EE-E94F8C275BF1.jpg E26CAB57-33B6-476F-8DAB-D46932CB62E1.jpg 5B394288-B1FA-4E98-992F-8BE73C4F1543.jpg

Being acutely aware of the possible disturbance to our fellow members of the audience, we were worried about dehydration during the theatre event and so immediately adjourned to the pub where we met up with Chris Parkes and rehydrated before arriving at the Q theatre. We had chosen to attend the TOOLMAKERS evening and what a treat it was. Overseas stars such as Thomas Lie-Neilsen and Vic Tessolini shared the stage with our own Terry Gordon, Kevin Inkster and Chris Vesper. There were revelations, humour and displays of woodworking passion. As there were to be no pictures taken in the theatre, here are are few imaginations from your own minds...

It's a tad early for refreshment, but for a treat such as this I may have to revise the philosophy. Sitting down with glass (empty for the moment ) waiting eagerly.

I attended Matt Kenney's 1 day Kumiko class and certainly wasn't disappointed! It was a fantastic day and picked up some new skills for someone who is mainly power tool focused.

Spending some family time down here but can't wait to head to the show on Sunday.

    Default Location, location, location.

It seems that the organisers are trying to keep the venue a secret as there is virtually no advertising of the event on the way in from Goulburn via Lake Bathurst and very little directional signage in the general area around Bungendore.
The showgrounds are located on the road between Bungendore & Sutton at Mathews Lane, Bungendore, so give the young lady in your GPS something to talk about on your way there.
I called into the showground on the way through this afternoon, plenty of activity with vendors setting up thier displays.
It should be a great event, hope the weather does the right thing for us.

It was a fantastic venue and the interviewer whose name escapes me made the whole thing a great experience with a very professional and well researched approach covering how each person became involved in making tools which was extremely interesting. Who knew the Terry Gordon was a navigator for the RAAF in Orions and was introduced to his philosophy of high angle planes by a cabinet maker in Butterworth RAAF base in Malaysia. The interviews were followed by a panel discussion with Q&A from the audience that became largely focused on children and woodworking which the interviewer has a personal involvement in.

    Default To be continued....... continued!

I’m sorry about the delay in posting but the entire ‘usual list of suspects’ was overwhelmed but a severe outbreak ...... SEVERE......... of bottle borne chronic fatigue syndrome!
We started today by having breakfast at an ‘interesting’ cafe at a nearby shopping centre. From the way we were treated, one could almost believe that we had managed to offend all of them during our previous evenings escapades.... and then I realised that could have been possible?
After breakfast we headed off to Bungendore itself, and especially the fabulous Bungendore Gallery. This is the show place of Australia’s finest woodwork (AlexS paid me to say that .... only joking!). I will post only a few pics (courtesy Groeneaj) to confirm my point...

We left the gallery (no Pat, we were not ejected, it was just a misunderstanding between the gallery management and myself?) and wandered around the village for a while. A decision to partake of antipasto back at the AirBnB was only mildly interrupted by a visit to the Showground and Lark Hill winery. After lunch, we headed off to the Australian War Memorial (AWM). It is, and hopefully always will be, the most moving of all experiences. Fence Furniture found and placed a red poppy at his Great Uncle’s memorial and we spent a lot of time wandering around a few of the exhibits. It is simply too big, and too intense, to see all of it in one visit. I explained to the group that I had something special to show them and took them to a photograph of my own father (kneeling on the left)......

..... which resulted in ANOTHER outbreak of chronic fatigue syndrome.
In the Afghanistan Hall, Groeneaj showed us where he served and it is so comforting to know that Australia is still in safe hands. We continued to wander....

.... asked Simpson for a lift....

    69B9B4FA-D49A-450D-A3FD-2454D5E936B9.jpeg

... and headed back to the Airbnb for a well deserved meal of left-over antipasto. We have spent the night in training for tomorrow’s REAL woodwork market event and meeting up with Pat, Uncle Al and royflatmate .... plus any others who might make the journey!

Thursday arvo was a fascinating trip to Thor's Hammer. It would be interesting to know just HOW many cubes of timber they have there (and have to move to new premises soon.
