Thread: carbatec no show

I remember the store in Braeside used to do something similar..... Does this mean even less vendors at the show??

Apparently they announced two years ago that they were no longer going to shows as of 2018. That was before the new owner of the shows took over. Perhaps they may change their position.

Either way I don't think I'm bothered. I rarely purchase from them, and go to some lengths, and possible extra expense, not to.

I'd like to see them try and start up an operation in the USA. Reckon that with their level of service they'd last at least a few days.

Carbatec have just taken delivery of a large quantity Tasmanian wood - I spoke to the owner of the Tasmanian Company supplier.

Perhaps this was in anticipation of their in-house Springvale show.

So no Carbatec and no Lie Nielsen Australia. A pity as I was hoping to pick up a LN plane. As for carbatec, I ordered some stuff on Sat and they haven't even shipped yet. Given it usually takes about 5 days to get here once shipped it would have been about twice as fast to get stuff from overseas...

Perhaps Dom you are assuming that they had it in stock, or that they care about your order?

I suspect that the fair dinkum players will be at next year's shows. Carbatec may not be there for a little while yet....

I bought a 21 inch bandsaw from Carbatec at the Melbourne show probably 7 years ago. I got a few bucks discount from the normal list price but I had to go to their store to get it as they didn't have one at the show. Just to make it worse they told me that I had to go to the store the following week as there was nobody there to load it. So I had to make another separate trip.

I thought at the time that they might as well just do what the Braeside store was doing and running their own discount day around show time. I guess I was just thinking a few years ahead of them.

Don't expect to see McJings at the shows anytime soon either. I was in there recently picking up a few items and having a chat, and apparently the costs of stands no longer makes it viable for them.

I should think this applies to anyone trying to sell large quantities of low value items; online sales make a lot more sense.

I might do the (revamped) Canberra Show this year just to see if anything has changed (or if anyone else turns up).

doug - I know what you mean. About 5 years ago I went to the Sydney Show, in a borrowed ute, cash burning a hole in pocket, to buy a jointer/thicknesser. Unfortunately there was nothing to buy

I suspect a few exhibitors got caught on the hop by the change of ownership, and may otherwise have been there with more notice. It sounds like many or most exhibitors had had a gutful of the ways things were going, especially costs to exhibit - if you can't make a profit then there's no point in going. Particularly for someone like McJings - just imagine how much preparation they would have to do to pack up a bazillion small items, lay them out for display, pack up what's left, put them back into stock - and then they have to sell enough at the show to make $6000 back out of their profits before they break even.

Wow. Does it cost $6000- for a stand!? That is crazy.

Still it's dissapointing that some exhibitors won't be there. This is the one opportunity to see some of the tools first-hand and experience buying something directly, in person, from the vendor vs online.
