    Default Thanks for dropping By

A big thanks to all you who dropped by and had a chance to say hello.

Getting ready was hectic as I had a Boutique Timber Auction, African Drumming week long camp and a heap of stuff to get ready for the Festival. Including a last minute workbench.
My helpers and their vehicle broke down so I didn't have cajons, djembes or tent!

Fortunately I had family down that way and they all chipped in and gave a hand.

Friday was a workshop day with no stalls so I was able to have a rest and prepare for Saturday.
Saturday was hectic from about an hour before the gates were supposed to open. We were near the entrance so had lots of lookers and talkers and additions to our Log Drum Making workshop.
We were fully booked for the 1 1/2 hour workshop and I was flat out trying to look after 12 workers. A few were Father/son, Mother/daughter and friends who worked together or in relay.
They were a great lot. Asking plenty of questions, very attentive and not critical at all.
No one had enough clamps except the lady who started late in the day. They even pinched the clamps holding the benchtop onto the base, to do their jobs.
Most were happy to stay more than the 1 1/2 hours to finish their drums. One family built one drum and took 2 kits home to do themselves.

Next year it will be 6 people for 3 hours.......much more realistic.

Sunday was thankfully quieter but we were still busy all day. I had an African musician playing for most of the day and he attracted plenty of interest. I even had time to talk to some of my family.
Late Sunday I did a quick dash to see some of the other stalls and got to say hello to a few familiar faces. Luckily I was too late to buy much.
Christian was still flat out on his Mirka stand but I added more Abranet to the lot I had borrowed from him earlier. He traded me for a Log Drum kit.
The show has a very friendly atmosphere and is easy. The organisers are very helpful. Parking is right there. Even the forecasted rain stay away mostly. An elderly man even gave me a piece of Gidgee that he bough for me a Thank You.

As much as I hate making big batches of anything and doing 40 log drum kits was a pain, it turned out to be a good idea for the festival.
Most were used in the workshops and all bar a couple were sold. I have orders for several more already.

A few picks show some of the mayhem and fun.

    Thanks again for dropping by.

Was there on Saturday with the extended family as well and everyone had a great time. The daughter is becoming a master at chopstick making. Once again the food was great which convinced the better half to make the trip too and she also enjoyed herself. The classes sure looked like a lot off fun so I will have to be more organised next year. I did pick up a drum kit from scally ( who was very busy) though and the young girl and I are in the process of putting it together. Needs a bit of polishing up and there will be photos. Although it does make a nice sound I will save your ears the pain of hearing me play it.

    Default Workshop Tongue drums

I did see your name in the book Shane.
Sorry I didn't get a chance to say hello but thanks for grabbing a Kit.

Saturday was manic. Hopefully your drum will look like some of the finished ones in the pics.

I did a lot of testing with designs and timbers. Flooded Gum Blue Gum and Forest Oak are the only timber I could get a decent sound from.

I searched around and bought Padauk, Purpleheart and Wenge as my backup tops. They sound very good but would have doubled the price of the kits.

My supply of old Blue Gum and Flooded Gum had a lot of Character. No one complained so they must like the timber with more interest.
There were a couple they I had missed drilling all the dowel holes. Fortunately I had a drill and the Ozzie jig on hand and tried to pretend it was intentional.
Unfortunately a woodworker chose a kit with ends that didn't fit. No idea how one board managed to be 2mm wider than every other board. I swapped it over for another kit.
Hopefully you didn't get the bodgy one Shane. I am pretty sure it is back in my shed.

My intention was to get them to work on different techniques of joining the boxes.....Dominos, Hidden dowels and Through Dowels and I had a Dovetailed box to show. Then finish up with a decent looking drum that had a good sound.
Later they could make their own or buy a kit with the more expensive and better sounding tongues.

Enjoy the finished drums and happy
