I have been considering a camping holiday in Tassie since I moved to Melbourne, with the intent to fill the ute with fine timber for the way home.

What is more concerning is the number of timber merchants that are not exhibiting any more. The first time I attended the show in Melbourne there were quite a few timber merchants, big and small. It appears that half the bigger ones dont come any more and the little ones are now almost non-existent.

As a class of exhibitor, timber merchants seem to me to be over-represented in the ranks of the disappearing exhibitors. I may be proven wrong by someone with accurate figures, but that is how I see it because they are the ones I mainly go to see, so I notice it more when I look for them each year.

Scott, I talked to them late on the Sunday at last year show and they said that they would have made more money by staying home and selling normally rather then coming over and having to take stock back again.

Surely this creates an opportunity for other local timber suppliers in the respective states

Yeah, that's fair enough Peter. To me, seeing and feeling the timber makes me more inclined to buy. I wish them well, it must be hard to run a business in today's climate.
