Not really a surprise. Didn't they do the same this year at Sydney and Brisbane?

So I will give it another try this year and the experience will probably determine my future attendance. As somebody has already mentioned if there is no support then there will be no show and I feel sure that we all really like the idea of such an event, we just want to see as many exhibitors as possible and obviously it has to make economic sense to them to enable a win/win situation.
OK I will also make the effort and go on Saturday and take pot luck!

It looks like it will be the funeral in Shepparton for me, so Friday is out. I don't like my chances of getting parking on Saturday or Sunday so the rest of you can fight over the timber.

It's a bit of a mean move. There's no way i'd have time to go to both the woodshow and carbatec in the same weekend and if others are like me Carbatec are effectively actively competing with the woodshow. I could understand if a vendor said - "we aren't going to be at the woodshow this year so here are some discounts on our website as a consulation and in celebration of the woodshow", but not pressuring people to go to their store INSTEAD of attending the woodshow. It's not a nice move by Carbatec towards the vendors that have made the effort and expense to attend.

I'm not sure if it's a conscious move to hurt the woodshow or if it's just poorly thought out.

    Cheers, Dom

Parking is free for people visiting Seaworks Venue for a show.

Thanks - is that offstreet parking within the venue?

Definitely to compete with/hurt the show. Why would they want people going to a show featuring all their competitors?
Disappointing - I wonder why they are not attending after being at every show I can remember? I can appreciate it is a massive effort packing a truck and setting up all the machines, but why is this year any different to past years? Falling out with the new organisers? More expensive than previous years? Or have they just decided they are big/famous enough that they don’t need to promote themselves? Whatever the reason I think it stinks. I have a shopping list ready and even if I don’t get it all on the weekend, hopefully I will come away with a list of new stores and suppliers I can support instead of them.

I’ve heard but can’t confirm the new show owner promoter is ex Carbtec,
Does that have a bearing on the decision for Carbtec not being at the show no idea,
Last show I attended they had a great display with lots of staff on hand.
That would cost a ton to put on.

    Cheers Matt,

    Cheers Matt,
Yeah ok. Maybe there is a personal grudge there or they may be angry at new rates etc.

Otherwise, I can fully understand it may not be worth attending due to the cost and effort required to attend. Thus I have no problem with Carbatec or any other vendor not attending - it takes away from the enjoyment of the show for me/others but that is 100% their decision to make and I support that.

However, I thought that there may be some sense of "community" in the woodworking community or at least an understanding that promoting woodworking as a whole can only be good for everyone involved - all boats rise with the tide sort of thing. Thus, running an in-store only sale on the same day(s) as the woodshow can only be detrimental to the woodshow, all of the vendors who attend (both competitors to Carbatec and those in completely different markets eg. Wood suppliers etc), and ultimately woodworking in Australia. I am therefore surprised and dissapointed in Carbatec's approach in this. Why not run a sale next month or even next week instead - it has nothing to do with the woodshow anyway. Or run an online sale that doesn't preclude someone also attending the show.

    Cheers, Dom

As I see it, it is not the role of the attendees at the show (us) to pass judgement on any business who has decided either to attend or not attend the show. As far as I know nobody who has posted here knows for sure the reasons why any of the businesses who are not attending have made that decision so it is all speculation.

Are they really trying to hurt the show?
    I don't know.

Are they trying to make the best decision that they can for their own business?
I would like to think so but again I do not know for sure. But yes, I think that having their sale this weekend is not in anyone's best interests including their own. Have it the weekend before next time and get everyone's tool budget before the show even starts.

Anyway, all that aside, the first thing I am looking at is what exhibitors WILL be there and is it worth my effort to go to see them. This decision must be taken, in my case at least, by considering my physical limitations with my back and other broken bits. Can I get to the venue easily and navigate around it especially if I am having a bad back day.

I sent an email to Candice - show organizer, weeks ago asking about disabled parking and access and have not received a reply. Today I went onto Seaworks' facebook page where they say that they answer any query typically in a few minutes. Well I have posted my query three times so far since 8am and no reply yet.

Right now I have a misaligned bone in my right knee so I will not be walking far but I seem to be getting no help at all in finding out how far I might need to walk. I might be lucky though - It looks like my knee is bad enough to get me out of having to drive to Shepparton on Friday for a funeral of someone who I did not even know existed until they passed away, but not quite bad enough to stop me going to the show - provided I can get enough information to determine that is feasible.

OK, I just went for a walk down to Seaworks to check out the parking. There's quite a bit of parking at the rear of the venue which I would expect to be allocated to exhibitors and maybe purchase collection. The parking in Nelson Place is ticketed, 3hr max, $3.50ph. I noticed 3 handicapped parking spaces in the restaurant area, 2 of them about 100m or so from the venue, 3hr limit but no charge. There's free parking in surrounding streets though some have 2 hour limits. The Williamstown station, the next stop after Williamstown Beach station, is something like a 500m (don't quote me) straight walk down Ann St then turn left at Nelson Place.
There's no sign of action at the venue today and absolutely nothing on the site to say that the event is on.
In regards an earlier comment of free parking to attendees the only way I could see that working was if the council instructed the parking officer not to book anyone in the vicinity.

Regarding FREE PARKING: I spoke with the organisers today and they say there is a combination of free on-site parking and free off site parking, about 2 minutes walk away is another car park set aside for the venue. So parking should not be problem.

Looking forward to setting up tomorrow. We've just sent a container down (containing our planer/moulders) and another truck with sawmills. Drop in and say hi if you get a chance. We will be out the back making noise and dust.
