    Default Day 1

A reasonable run into the city and an on-time arrival saw a good start to the day.

Unfortunately my phone has decided that because it is out of contract by 18 days it is time to play up on me and I had difficulty getting some phone calls - my apologies to those affected. On the bright side, Telstra apparently knew this and bombarded me with messages and calls all day

The day started with a very long queue of people waiting to get in to the T&WWWS (except for the Forum volunteers who were met at the door and allowed to walk around before the crowds).

A lot of people came early and the place was humming until about 2pm when it slowed to be just 'busy'. I think Jim Carroll had to have oxygen pumped into his area as it seemed to be jam-packed for most of the day.

Despite advertising 'no coffee' earlier this week, Neil uBeaut Ellis kicked in a bunch of shekels and the coffee was there - very much appreciated, thanks Neil!

The stands were all busy so I did not have a lot of time to talk to the vendors and ask questions about new stuff. I know Terry Gordon has a moving filister plane in the works and hopefully some time over the weekend I can ask him about it. Chris Vesper was near Jim Carroll's stand and pretty much buried in people each time I went up there. Jim Davies was very busy judging by the fact I couldn't see his stand for most of the day. Carba-Tec had a lot going on at their stand, it did not have the space of previous years but the crowds didn't seem to mind.

The Lie-Nielsen / Eckherd stand was diagonally opposite the forum stand, I thought this cruel and unusual punishment. Fortunately they were also pretty busy so a healthy (financial) distance was able to be maintained. I noticed some very nice timbers this year, worth a good browse.

Timbecon returned to the Melbourne show this year and are showing all the signs of becoming an emerging player in the Melbourne area; lets hope so. They had some very nice router tables, Incra positioners and router raiser table inserts. Note to self: remove your 'Exhibitor' tag when standing at other peoples stands (I couldn't figure out why everyone was asking so many questions about the LS Positioner and router tables while I was browsing them).

Returning home was the hardest part of the day, peak hour traffic and accidents made it a 1-1/2 hour journey instead of 30 minutes. Still, that was okay, time to think about what was on offer and tempting!

Thank you to all the Day 1 volunteers.

A few photos taken later in the day after the crowd subsided a bit: (oh - why the pics of the lathe you ask? Theo Haralampou was lucky enough to get to be the first person to use this one, it was delivered fresh from the factory and set up late on Thursday. One very sweet machine.)

"decent" coffee? Not if I make it but I am sure there are caches of it around the building and in DFO somewhere...

I just spent an hour and a half writing my review of the day and when I went to submit it the bloody forum decided I was not logged in. I right clicked on the browser tab and clicked duplicate which pulled up a window which confirmed that I was indeed logged in. However I am not a massochist so unfortunately you all get to miss out on my words of wisdom and photos. Pleass forward all complaints to the forum
    Cheers

One perk of volunteering is not having to wait in the cue to buy your ticket. And you get to stand around chatting feeling like you are part of the show. ( and stash you purchases so you don't have to carry thim around all day. )

I was a little weighed down on the train home though. All the things I bought seemed to be made of really heavy metal. My hand bag wasnot built for such things.

Wonder if there is any way for online pre purchase of tickets to happen next time. The next door Pregrancy and Baby show had a separate cue for pre bought tickets. Although in past years the cue was not that big on Sunday when I usualloy went. Very long first thing on the Friday.

You mean, maybe set up something like this?

I think that would be a great idea.

    Default Day 2

Quite a day today: axe racing; Big Stan and the motley musicians; Vic Wood demos; Incra LS positioner demos at the Timbecon stand; Terry Gordon, Colen Clenton and Phoebe Everill; the "I wood like" team with the Sawstop demos and Minimax bandsaw (there is a pic of Stu holding a flitch from the saw 1/32" thick); Chris Vesper and his very fine tools - hard not to get tool envy there (leave it alone you guys...); Jim Carroll had some breathing space today; Wood Craft Supplies and Shelix Cutters (I must admit to wanting one of these); Cannings tools (sorry about the pics, couple of customers darted in and didn't move off for ages); Theo's demos and a bunch more.

Highlight of the day for me was the explanation by Darryl Smallman of the axe racing events and what the axemen are looking for in their 'log', the preparation and the technique. Brilliant stuff, very well explained and superbly demonstrated.

Theo Haralampou had a huge crowd and I didn't see him stop all day (I hope he had lunch!)

The Mens Shed stand is supported by volunteers also and does a great job of getting their message out, see here for more infomation: http://www.mensshed.org/home/.aspx.

A most enjoyable day, my thanks again to the volunteers who helped at the stand, I trust you also enjoyed your day at the show.

    Wow.

Some great photos there. How about some of the forum members who volunteered give some feedback.

I was really keen to get to the show this year, its been about 4 years since i was there last but the timing with other things didn't make it possible.

All these great photo's make me quite disappointed i've missed out, there looks to be some good stuff there. The open tool cabinet (that is full of beautiful looking stuff) on the back wall of the HNT Gordon stand is enough to make me want to jump in the car and have a look. But the thought of an 8 hour return journey brings me back to earth a bit.

Thanks to groggy and fubar for taking the time to post up these awesome pics.

    Steven.
