    Default Perth Wood Show 2014

[my apology if the pictures lack the usual crispness - they were taken with my wife "happy snapper"]

The Perth Wood Show began on Friday and ends Sunday. Today - Saturday - I joined my good friend Chris Vesper, toolmaker extraordinaire, at his stand ...

There were a number of other friends from across Australia - David Eckert, who runs Lie-Nielsen Australia (his company, Henry Eckert, is named for his young son) ...

And from Perth there is Neil Erasmus, maker of fine custom furniture and runs a woodworking school in the hill area. Second from left ...

There were the usual powertool representations (lots of them) ...

But also quiet Japanese tools ...

... displays of vintage hand tools by the Handtool Preservation Society ...

... and lots of tools for sale ...

Young children were encouraged to have a go ...

I had entered my chair in the furniture making competition. Each year I enter something to make up the numbers. I am probably the only handtool-orientated member of the Fine Wood Association, the club that runs the competition.

I received a "commended". The winning piece was this coffee table ...

The second place went to this unit (both first and second place went to Ian Houghton) ...

Third place went to this rocker ...

For me, the star of the show was this carving in Jarrah burl ..

This was the first prize box ..

... filled with many hidden compartments ...

    Much, much more.

    Regards from Perth

    Derek

Great set of photos Derek. For me it was almost a "virtual tour" of the show. Those Western Australians look very much like us Eastern Australians. The results of those fellas toil shows that there is a lot of talent in the west too. Thanks for the post
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

    Default Star of the show

    Hey Derek
Good write up and photos. I intended doing that, but forgot the camera.
If I may add to your post. I helped Derek Doak move his Timbers into the hall on Thursday, coz I'm big and dumb and can carry heavy things. Don't tell Derek, but I was buggered by Thursday evening.

Friday morning, got there by 0715 to help a mate move his lathe into the Vermec stand, opposite Derek Doak. Then helped Vermec, and Derek and anyone else until the show opened.

The highlight of the show was a carving called 'The Torso', but Martin Jackson, he sold it Saturday. He has done a few of them now, but that was awesome. He had a another 10 pieces on display, all stunning. The piece title 'Seagrass' was from a York Gum Burl he bought from me. Both of these piece featured in a recent article of AWR.
Great to see the Tassie Timber guy, awesome tassie timbers, reasonably priced
Great show, spent heaps, but enjoyed it
    Sincerely
    Willy

Nope. Sorry Rod you are wrong
    West Australians are vastly different

They have evolved a number of features that differ from you Easterners (hack, cough, spit on ground)
    Firstly,
we have developed webbed feet as we only walk on sand, this heaps spread the load
We are all rich!! Yep, all of us, coz everyone thinks we all work in the mines on 300k a year
We have the ability to breathe under water, coz every day is 35 deg, we go fishing and diving everyday, unless we are at the mines
Apparently, there are only two teams in the AFL, and every time one of them loses, it is because those Easterners conspired against the good gentle folk of WA (I prefer Rugby and Rugby League)
Our timbers are superior, Jarrah, Marri and Sheoak etc unlike those Easterner weeds

How does it go, Willie? Eastern State B....ds arriving by plane are advised to set their clocks back by 3 hours......and 30 years .
Lived there for 6 years in the 1970's during the Pseidon boom. Great place, bit too isolated for my wife.
    regards,

    Dengy

It was a pretty good three days, well, five days actually when you consider setting up and packing up. I caught up with a few forum members to say g'day. We got good crowds past our stand each day and our tool sales went well.
One of our HTPS WA members, Les, won second prize for his beautifully made Flemish Tailors Ell and its box.W A Woodshow 2014 008.jpg

    Cheers,
    Geoff.
