Thanks so much for all the likes and thanks I received for the photos. If you have the love of wood in your DNA, Timber and Working with Wood shows, are definitely the place to go.

Regrettably, the exhibitors have declined over the years. Robert Dunlop stopped coming a number of years ago and is now deceased. On one of his last visits he had a beautiful Mulga table on display. Neil Scobie and his wife have stopped coming to the shows. Vicmarc no longer exhibits at the Brisbane show. Vermec was not there this year and I was told by his daughter that Enzo has been crook and the rental costs at the show have become prohibitive.

Also missing this year was Jim Carrol and his team from Carrols Woodcraft Supplies.

However, on the positive side, I saw many students who are obviously doing woodworking at schools and colleges, carrying around lumps of timber to take home. They are the future of our industry, and already appreciate real wood as opposed to the likes of chipboard and MDF.
It was also great to see Stan Ceglinski, ever the showman, interacting with the crowd. Any finally, I must acknowledge the Mens Shed movement that gives both fellowship and the opportunity to work with wood.

There's always talk about who's missing but no one ever seems to mention any of new or returning exhibitors.

What about the return of Timbecon to the show. First time in Brisbane for a number of years and back with 3 stands.
Not only that but they travelled all the way from Perth and Melbourne to be there.

Yes I was gob smacked to see the size of timbercon. They are also branching out into tools for green wood use as well I understand. .

Greg from perth was demonstrating traditioal wood working methods which was great to watch

As for me ... just hit Moree. Almost 1 am. Retied some ropes on the trailer and about to head off again

I take your point, Neil, optimism is better than pessimism, but unfortunately, the Brisbane TWWW is sinking, 'ol china, & I reckon it needs some radical therapy if it's to survive. Yes, it was good to see Timbecon back, otherwise Carbatec would have had just about the whole show to themselves, which would have meant spreading their stuff even more thinly. But the return of one exhibitor didn't hide the inescapable fact that this year's show was even smaller than last year's. Last year I was alarmed to note that the back section of the building was no longer needed; this year, the middle section was empty & closed-off too! The entire show (apart from the timber sellers outside) was accommodated comfortably within the front section. I could only be there on the Friday, but based on previous years' experience I will be very surprised if total attendance figures are not well down on last year's (unless there was a huge crowd on Saturday morning!?).

I don't pretend to have any magic solutions, but something is desperately needed to inject a bit more life into the show. It just isn't enough to have a couple of big retailers flogging their wares - ok, you may save a few $$s on freight, or pick up the odd 'show special' (there wasn't an overwhelming number of those!), but where is the inspiration and the work to aspire to? Twenty years ago, there were at least 10 times as many demonstrations going on, from fine furniture-making to carving, & numerous lathes churning away. I think people have got to see high quality work being done to be inspired (then they'll rush off to buy the fancy tools & finishing products to do it with!

Perhaps Brisbanites are just apathetic, or we aren't big enough to support two big wood-related shows so close together on the calender? The RNA venue suits the machine & tool retailers, p'raps but the Maleny show is getting far better for woodworking action & variety. They also run the Wootha prize, which has numerous categories (and a pretty impressive purse these days!), plus far more action on the days. I reckon the TWWW needs to run some sort of competition to attract some interesting woodwork, for people to ogle. It also needs to get more sawdust flying! Nothing attracts a crowd more quickly than tools being deftly used, be they electron or potato powered.

Apologies for the pessimistic evaluation, I think I'm more of an optimist by nature, but I don't think you need to be an old pathologist to smell impending death.....

Have to agree unfortunately with IW. It would have been good to have Timbercon back, and I wish them all the best with success, but those of us with long memories would remember what they were like before. Advertising was always a bit light for the WWW show but this year I didn't see on TV or hear on radio anything at all. The only advertising was on this forum.

Melany may be more vulnerable to the weather as was experienced this year, but even so, this year was apparently a huge success for exhibitors and customers that attended.
