I dash out to Mal and we find a short block of Mackay cedar.......my choice. It wasn't as heavy as the preferred species but was a more manageable size.
I take it back to the Woodturners..................."Do you have a saw so we can cut it down to size".....
No problem...............
I dash down to Major and they unplug the tablesaw they were demonstrating and plug in a bandsaw................a few minutes later I have three "Mallet blanks"...........thanks Reagan.
Back to the Woodturners
Several minutes of discussion/suggestions and good natured arguments and one blank is selected, marked up and mounted on a Woodfast lathe.
Steve proceeds to turn my mallet, stopping several times to make sure I am happy and to fit it to my hands.
He adds a couple of burnt grooves for trim.
I now have a great medium weight custom ......
