Quick update.
Thanks to all the people who offered to come help move. It was greatly appreciated. But we were informed Friday Arvo that the vendor has moved settlement to the following week.
So once again thanks for the very kind offer. I am constantly amazed at what comes out of this forum.
cheers

G'Day Ladies & Gents,
At the Joinery GTG at Fletty's today the Sydney Wood Show was discussed briefly..
The resolve was, I think, to meet up at Boutique Timber around 12noon to have lunch together.
So folks if you're at the show on Friday around lunch time and want to chat & catchup wit some old forum friends "SEE YOU THERE"....
Cheers, crowie

Don't waste your $12 (if you got the Carbatech discount) this show has plummeted to new depths. All stuffed into what I think is about half of the show bag hall which also included all woodworking displays and clubs as well as many of the usual's just not there or greatly reduced in stock on show.
I wont be back at this show ever again, the decline over the years has reached the point where I can't be bothered any longer.______________

Show
Saw a lot of formites today, all seemed happy....The timber part of the show just keeps growing with more suppliers, so something is working, nobody purchasing timber is complaining.

My first visit to the wood show so I can't compare it to previous shows. My impression was that it was busy for a Friday, will organised but the numbers may have been boosted by a number of school groups. The Carbatec stall had a line up of people waiting to pay for goods so I bet they won't be complaining if the weekend continues like that. Most stalls had healthy crowds.
I bought a few items but was limited as SWMBO had the car and it's a bit hard to take slabs home on a bus and the train
Met up with a few formites at boutique timbers as arranged and got a present from Crowie AKA Santa. Nice new set of knives for my recent Dewalt purchase - thanks heaps Crowie
Pac man put me onto a couple of good DVDs and a couple of books - thanks for the advice.
All-in-all I had a productive time and will go next year.
Cheers.

I also went to the show today and took 2 mates, only one of whom is a fellow woodworker. Yes, it is smaller than previous years and that must be concerning but my visits are driven by both technical and social needs and both were met today. As noted by Greg above, I am also VERY happy with my timber purchase.
I don't know what the answer is to declining WWWSs around Australia but there must be something wrong with their model if, for example, the Maleny Timber Expo and Kyneton Lost Trades Fair continue to grow exponentially?
Im not going to help the predictions of gloom to become self fulfilling prophecies by saying that I'm not going again so I'm going public by saying that I will keep going as long as they are held but let's please have a conversation about how to improve it. My first suggestion is a cheaper venue to reduce costs for the exhibitors. Combine it with other kindred crafts to broaden its appeal. Offer a significant cash prize for the best piece of woodwork exhibited and possibly hold it every second year?a rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!

i was there and happy to pay entry fees for my wife and i .... she does a walkaround with me then finds a coffee and a place to sit for as long as i need to spend there .. as was said above, lines of people paying for stuff everywhere i went there .... traders should be happy ...
met up with the others at lunchtime, and back to the motel in the afternoon ... might write some more about it when i get home and on a computer rather than ipad, but that won't be until sunday
i expect to return next year and will definitely get to canberra and maybe melbourne as well
regards david

When a business like McJing isn't attending the show in their own home town it definitely points to the cost of attendance as the main problem. Any business with a small product range and/or lower margins just can't justify the cost. As long as there is a demand for timber and suppliers can sell in reasonable quantities the timber suppliers will always be there, it's the tool retailers with thinner margins who will be missing.
I always enjoy attending the shows, but as fletty has pointed out, unless the promoters can reduce the cost to exhibitors things aren't going to get any better.

I went for the second time today. It's still worth it to me. I'd be interesting to know what is missing in comparison to the glory years. Is it a lack of variety, or just that everything is smaller.
I was able to buy some stuff that "I was going to buy anyway" (honest!). So the admission price and public transport were probably less than the postage costs or inconvenience from driving around to pick things up anyway. I also picked up some wood offcuts to make into some boxes. Given the cost I'm not too worried about stuffing up due to not having made boxes before.
So generally happy. (Plus I took a day off work...)
