    Default Sydney T&WWWShow 2011 washup

The first day of the Show seemed that attendances were down, much easier to move around than last year. I didn't spend a lot of the readys today but took in a couple of the demos, including Neil's exposition on flat finishes. Caught up with the evil twin of gawd, Neil and Pauline, Christos, Dave (nzcarver), AlexS, but missed seeing several of the usual suspects.

Numbers were up by a few hundred on last year, don't remember the exact figure.

Most seemed to have a good day. Forum stand seemed to be well attended from what I saw. Not jumping like Melbourne and Brisbane but but appeared to be humming along nicely.

Bit of a different show this year to others and there was plenty for all to see. Lots of new stuff with the Designers on Show section being completely new and something a bit different for a woodworking show.

Didn't get a chance to have a look around but what little I saw seemed to be pretty good.

The tool guys with all the second hand stuff were really jumping, with large crowds almost all day.

    Cheers - Neil

Personally I think this has been great, some new aspect for the other half with the crafts on offer. Very interesting to see this side of the show.

We started this thread for the show. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/sy...elcome-136876/

So do drop by the forum stand and say hello if you have time.

I should also mention that I will be there for the third day as once again one of the volunteers. (Needs a smiley on the end)

Greame sorry I missed seeing you on Firday

I agree with Neil numbers up on Friday schoolies wise anyway after 2pm where did everyone go.

Today was steady all day not over crowded I was away from the OTGA stand for a good part of the morning as my youngest son came in and a Uncle whom I haven't seen in 24 yrs. Then back to the grind or is that OT work.

I spent two days at the show. Yesterday I took my dad which was good. I scored some 1250mm Bessey K-Body clamps, but I won't see them again until my birthday in August....

We caught Neil's u-Beaut demo on finishing flat surfaces which is a must see for anyone who does flat surfaces.

Then went over and had a yarn to Wheelin.

Today I went back mainly to sit through Neil Scobie's three sessions on the display cabinet featured in the last edition of AWR. Although, I did also buy two 600mm Bessey K-Body clamps, 3m of Silky Oak from Greg, some *****BEAUTIFUL***** New Guinea Rosewood from Trend, and some Purple Heart to go with it.

As usual, the Hordern Pavilion had some master pieces. The carving pieces seemed to be the best so far.

    Nathan.

EDIT: Oh, two 100 x 100mm red gum posts that I need for some flared coffee table legs, swansdown mops and hard shellac from Neil.... and how could I forget: I was under strict instructions from my lovely wife to come back with 'something nice' for a birthday present from her to me (birthday is still two months away though, very sad). Seeing as my current Black & Decker ROS now grinds instead of orbits, I bought a Festool 150/3..... come on August!

I think I was good this year. I only thing that I needed to purchase was a face shield for when I finally get into trying my hand into turning. This was a must have. Everything else was just an after thought.

    Tung Oil
Diamond grinding wheel dresser (just need a grinder now)
    An Awl
    A square
    Goggles
    Shellawax Cream
    Shellawax Glow
A Polishers Handbook, By Neil Ellis
    Two little piece of wood
Clock parts (spoke to an angel)
Pen parts and mandel(don't ask ).

Watch a couple of demonstrations Stan Ceglinski, Theo Haralampou, Neil Scobie, Tim Skilton and the lads across the way, just to name a few. Could also hear Neil Ellis every now and then.

Spoke to a lot of fellow wood workers as part of the forum stand. Spoke to some recognized faces from last year. Spoke to some forum members. I think that it has been a very good show.

I have a suggestion with regards to the show. Having never been before and this time being as an exhibitors helper. I went for a bit of a walk with Ray (wheelin ) and we walked for ages to get through to where the OTGA stand was and I found it very quiet on people it is my opinion that alot of people only looked in the main pavilion but no further. I would like to see a mix of craft, demonstrators and all other stalls that would ensure that all the stands were seen at the show and everyone had a fair turnover of people.

Thats just me view what do others think ?

    Cheers Ian

Ian I like the way you think but would prefer it all in/under one roof like other venues have.

There is the situation of dust on vendors good to think about those poor fellows who have to clean may not like it. BUT hey we used to have Stan the man right next to us with all his saw show and noise of chainsaws going.

I understand what you are saying Ray. I did notice that behind us there was a company doing drill demos into medium size trees (logs) making a mess also there were turners doing demo's (all great to watch) and I agree it would be great to have everything under the same roof so they could all get value for money when it comes to stalls.

    Cheers ian

Sounds like the show was a great success,
Makes me a little more disappointment I broke my hip and missed out.
Mind you I properly saved a few dollars not spending on some good buys, bummer.
    Cheers, Crowie

Ian you are dead right, I felt like a duffer when back home I had a look at the show handouts & found a second hall I hadn't visited! Can't comment on the show vs others as this was my first but thoroughly enjoyed it, although my purchase of a pair of extra long Bahco clamps still confounds me.

You are only saying that because you were on the other hall. The best hall was the one where the forum stand was. Now I ask you where else can you get a cup of tea or coffee with a biscuit.
