Thread: Tinitus

Haven't heard of it Rod, but can't help thinking it looks a bit suss. I have had tinnitus for over 20 years and now wear hearing aids which do help, and I go to an audiologist around once a year, and I've never heard mention of such treatment.

I'd be wary, I suffer from tinnitus in the left ear, which is the one that I had a Cochlear Implant done last October and I had it prior to and still have it after the OP and have had all sorts of tests done prior to the OP.

From all the discussions with surgeons, audiologists and other professionals, it is something that I'm going to live with for the rest of my life, in other words there is not really anything they can do for me.

In saying all that, I'm deaf as a doorknob yet I can hear the ringing very clearly once I've removed the sound processor when it's at its worse.

Very suss website. Nowhere does the website indicate who is going to perform the therapy. I'd give them a call and ask if a "Doctor" is going to administer the treatment. If not, tell them to go to buggery.

There is also no clinical evidence on the website. Very dodgy.

I've got it in both ears, i've talked to a few doctors on the subject and as far as it is known there is no cure. There are a lot of dodgy curealls, so be carefull.

I had heard of a cure a few years ago for it but it quickly went quiet. I would love to have it cured as it drives me mad some days.

I am a former audiologist, and can assure all of you that this treatment for tinnitus is complete and utter rubbish. Tinnitus is NOT caused by "inflamed nerve endings" - this in itself is a nonsense statement. Nerve endings do not become "inflamed". Tinnitus is typically caused by damaged nerve endings, and for some sufferers the damage may be only temporary following short periods of exposure to loud noise (such as attending an AC/DC concert!) but in many instances this damage is permanent due to very prolonged periods of exposure to noise. Laser treatment of the inner ear is simply not possible (not unless you wish to submit to complex surgery such as that required for a cochlear implant) and it is preposterous to suggest that anything of this nature could be performed by anyone less than a highly trained Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.

My advice is to steer as well clear of this crowd as possible!

Tinnitus seems to be varied in the way it manifests itself.

An uncle of mine suffered with tinnitus, but it was in fact a symptom of his Meniers' disease.

Noise (such as loud concerts) seems to be frequently attributed to the cause of tinnitus. However, my wife suffers mildly from tinnitus and she has not been, as far as I'm aware, been subjected to any significantly loud noise. She tells me she always has some degree of ringing in her ears. Sometimes it is just worse than others.

She tells me she ignores it otherwise she would go crazy. I think sometimes she has a little listen. She does believe that is affecting her hearing and why she seems to be increasingly hard of hearing (by her own admission).

I on the other hand have been subjected to a whole pile of loud noise: Chainsaws, woodworking tools and an industrial environment for over thirty years and, so far at least, no sign of problems.

I have not heard of any cures or remedies for tinnitus.

I have just recently noticed in the last month or so a ringing or more accurately a high pitched hissing sound in my ears but at least when I'm concentrating on whatever I don't hear it, it's only when I'm resting that it comes, which is annoying as I don't rest much and when I do it's the last thing I need. I hope it's not Tinnitus, I send much sympathy to those who have it.

Sounds exactly like what I have, I hope for your sake it isn't, it can keep you awake some nights.

I don't suffer from Tinitus but I regularly have a wax built up in my right ear. So when it gets too much I get the ringing noise in that ear and become hard of hearing so I know it's time to get it rinsed out.

Might be worth getting it checked by your doctor Craig.

I am a sufferer.
When I was working the boss organised for all the employees to have our hearing checked. They put us in a sound proof booth to do the test. When asked if I could hear nothing before the test began I told them except for the ringing in my ears. They said "You have tinnitus" while I thought it was normal as I have had it so long.
When I was an apprentice back in the early 70s, I would shoot brick ties onto concrete walls for the bricklayers. I did this 3 days a week every week for many months. No hearing protection no eye protection. Then after that woodworking machines etc etc. and now I have a menotenous tune in my head all the time. I can't stand silence I have to have at least a radio on to mask the ringing. I read somewhere that people commit suicide to get away from the ringing (More like a hiss) and can appreciate why they do it.
I have 2 hearing aids to use now as the rest of my hearing is affected

Yeah, I do do the blokey thing I must admit, I think it's built in not to complain. I think it comes from my parents and their parents living through hard time in the world, world wars, economic depression, those sort of things, can understand their reaction really. Got some time off now, better get myself up on the hoist I think.

So true, but the smart thing is to get things checked out when it starts going wrong rather then wait until everything seizes up.

I'd hate to think how I would be now if I didn't get myself checked out 4 years ago and got the cancer whilst it was still in its relevant early stage. That's what makes me now go to the doctor when something seems wrong.
