Getting older
Why is my mind thinking like it did in my prime but my body is behaving as though it is years ahead of me?
I have arthritic thumbs, the kind that is more common in females. My tendons in the right hand are shortening and I have some muscle wasting in the thumb-forefinger region. I can no longer reliably lift even lightweight objects between my thumb and fingers as I have no power in the grip.
Over the last few weeks I have found it impossible to raise myself from a squating or kneeling position unless I can lean on something and use my arms for extra leverage.
I don't experience any pain in the knee area until I try to get up. I can walk well enough, with no pain.
I ache constantly but not at a level that forces me to take medication. as a regular thing.
What is most annoying is that all of this means:
*Not being able to manipulate things properly. For instance, while doing reno work around the house I find it hard to pick up screws and the like. I can't handle doors and so on alone as my hands don't grip.
* The extra time taken to do things is a pain in the neck.
*Climbing ladders is now a diffcult operation.
I am wondering how I will go when I finally get back to the lathe.

To paraphrase a halfwit I once knew:
Life's a ####, and then you die!
At least your mind is still working, unlike some people I know, who have a perfectly functional body but nothing left up top, just sitting in God's Waiting Room. Read, write, do whatever your body will let you do - enjoy what you have.
Another useless meme:
You can't help getting older, but growing up is optional.

Arthur I thought moving further north towards perm sunshine would cure all ill's obliviously not
Or is it that you now have more time to imbibe instead of physical activities.

Yep, my Dad had polio at 16 and has put up with that sort of thing his whole life and now he's getting old as well with all the extra crap that brings. Thank God we don't live too long we couldn't stand the pain or the cost of the drugs

We all want to grow old without defect, my wife has long rheumatic diseases on her hands and joints, she has learned to live with this condition, fortunately she gets gold spray injections that stabilize, so my wife is able to everyday housework to do, if needed with my help.
Artur go in consultation with an arthritis specialist.

Thank you Ray!!! I think! I'm 65 this year, so you are a tad late,
Wasn't reaally whinging. Just had a bad day and wanted to sound off.
Saw my doctor and he said I can take Panadol osteo every day. I don't really want to do that, so on the days I have heavier workload I take two in the morning with breakfast and then 2 after lunch. This improves things no end.
I find I can cope with pain . It is the inconvenience that gets to me. Always done for myself and this is a strange new world for me.
Can't help but admire people who have lived all their lives with disabilities and be inspired by their acheivements.

So your still 64.
I take POstio also one every morning they are slow release although after my fall I had been taking two a day.
I do know a fellow who went straight onto the max daily dose of 8 for hip arthritis.
Keep active, make some changes these you have to fathom out through medical help or yourself. Oh Fish oil tabs 3 of a morning 2 of a night and Manuka Honey also an anti inflamatory. Nature knows best.

When I went to a lower limb specialist in 2009 for a severe knee pain problem he gave me the bad news it was my hip.
Fixed it a few months later with a full hip replacement then did the other one 2 years later. Both were caused by severe osteoarthritis.
The funny (not) thing is the pain was never in the hip, always elsewhere, found out it was referred pain.
Anyone with similar problems should see an orthopedic surgeon, they may save you from taking lots of painkillers some of which can easily become addictive.
Now I'm pain free after years of problems I am enjoying life more than ever.
My biggest problem now is the airport security checks.

And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better"

Ring all the bells do you Ian?
Wise words about seeing an ortho. Surgeon. That is on my to do list.
I take 6000mg |Fish oil daily as well as glucosamine. Doctor tells me krill oil is more effective, mainly because it is of more reliable quality.. He also suggested condroitin and msm are better than glucosamine.
Looks like I might have to start making some adjustments.

People that don't live with pain every day, just don't realise how much it can get you down and that, is the real problem!

It's a drag ain't it Arthur.
Panadol Osteo works for a lot of people without side-effects (see NPS home page: NPS - Better choices, Better health)
You should get reliable diagnoses for the correct treatment options. If you prefer to start with non-invasive options for heaven's sake don't go to professionals whose only tools are drugs or a knife.
For your hands, there are specialised hand therapists who come from physio or OT backgrounds with a further qualification in hand therapy.
For the other probs you mention, reading btwn the lines, you may just have been under-using these muscles and joints but in any case, I'd recommend you see a doc specialising in sport medicine or a good physio. Your garden variety GP is usually hopeless with soft tissue probs.
Re supplements, the research shows that Glucosomine with Chondroitin by and large has no effect above placebo. A few folk benefit; you may be one of them. And a placebo effect is not to be sneezed at ;-)
When you look at the research on maintaining effective functioning into old age some things are clear: exercise exercise and still more exercise as advised by a professional, & diet; avoid stress, smoking, and alcohol above the NHMRC rec'd limits; tendons and ligaments will weaken while muscle strength can be maintained.
Don't rely on your doc ... do your own research. Site above plus google Cochrane collaboration.

Yep. Be 'medicine-wise'.
Watch out for Panadeine cos that has an opioid in it which will make you sleepy. That can be a good thing if your pain is causing you distress and you are not far from bed.
These are over-the-counter drugs and do talk to the pharmacist about what you are looking for and what your conditions are.
They are also get of of jail cards if you're lucky and you must look at addressing the causes.
K. Rant over.Cheers, Ern

Arthur some years back when arthritis and Chronic Fatiuge/fibre Myaldga? (spelling) was bad, I discoverd New Zealand Green Lipped Muscles while out for dinner one night. I had about 5 during the meal and for the next week inflammation and pain was Nil.
For about 12 mths after I was able to get these through Woolies freezer section in brine alone or various additions such as Garlic etc. This worked well for about 3 years we'd only buy a container when I was feeling it at its worst. It has been medically documented thats for some it works again do a Google.
I think I have mentioned often before if I have alcohol at all for days after I suffer with arthritis and joint pain. I miss my Scotch but I don't miss the results in joint ache. My un-opened bottle of Glen Fiddich still sits in the cupboard 15 yrs now.
Drinking plenty water also flushes everything.
