On Xmas eve, on top of the usual degree of tiredness my right ankle started swelling and aching and over the week between Xmas and NY it got so bad I can now only hobble about 20m without needing a rest. Fortunately can still sit for an hour or so and even drive for short distances. If I rest on my back for a couple of hours the pain subsides to a dull ache but then 10 mins standing up and it would start to hurt again. On Sunday I even felt good enough to start mowing (battery mower) the handkerchief size (~20m^2) back lawn but I could not finish it in one go and did the remainder this morning.

Meanwhile on New Years day SWMBO took off down south with the caravan and her buddies but I couldn't bear the thought of going (it was bad enough getting her packed and on the road) so I stayed home with the dogs. As it was not an emergency I hung out till my GP came back yesterday from Xmas break. GP diagnosed "gout" a blood test and some strong anti inflammatories. He's done this before and drawn a blank so this morning I got a second opinion from a doctor mate (who also has gout so he knows it well) and he reckons I don't have gout but that my sarcoidosis is flaring up as ankles are a prime target for certain forms of this disease. So, then tried to contact sarcoidosis specialist - he's away but I left a phone and email message and apparently it will get passed on to him this evening.

Last resort tried Dr Google who confirmed my mates diagnosis BUT lo and behold, the anti inflammatory prescribed by the GP for my so called gout is also recommended for swollen ankles for people with sarcoidosis. The anti inflammatory is called Colchicine and is not very pleasant (nausea) and so far it does not seem to have done anything for the pain so am still taking analgesics. Brain is fried from all the aches and pains and meds and can't even begin to think about any projects.

    Happy new year . . . . .

Well the meds appear to have done something helpful. Last night, with some assistance from analgesics I managed to get some sleep. This morning I drove my dogs down to a local park and parked next to a park bench from where I usually throw a ball for them with a "chucker". Seeing as I felt a bit better than usual, starting from the, bench, I managed 4 X 150 m walks out into the park (~75m out from and 75m back to the bench) with a 10 minute rest in between these walks. The last 75m walk I was very sore in completing, and now I am really sore but I will call it progress.

After yesterday's walk my ankles and shins continued to get sorer during the day and by the end of the day were worse than ever but again with assistance from analgesics, and some ice packs, I managed to get some sleep. Today I am planning no walks (dogs will just have to cope!) and see what happens. Still waiting on a response from the specialist.

[EDIT] Uric acid blood results have just arrived and I'm at the top of the acceptable range so Gout cannot be excluded. Going to see GP again today.

Saw specialist and GP who now both reckon its gout so now I'm on two anti inflammatories. Not much improvement after two days.

More than two weeks later and still no improvement.

So back to the docs and he sent me off for a CT scan which I had about an hour ago.

With a CT scan they can't give you a lot of immediate feedback as the computer has to process the data.
However the Radiographer did ask me if I had been in a car accident or jumped off something high, to which I said "no", but I though it was slightly odd.
Anyway the Radiogrqpher said I was free to go, so I hobbled back the car and drove off, down past the emergency hospital (!) and headed for home.

I forgot to set up my hands free mobile but as soon as I took off in the car I heard the phone buzzing away for 3 missed calls and then 15 minutes later a 4th call that I missed just as I pulled into the drive.

I looked at the missed calls (all from the same number) and not being a number I know, and no voicemail either, so I left it - if it's urgent they will call back.

    I sat down at the laptop and just for interest I put the number into Google and it's the Xray clinic. I thought they've probably just stuffed up my account or something so grabbed a coffee and then called back and they said;

"You have a fractured ankle and need to go to hospital emergency to get it attended to".

DANG - I just drove past the bloody emergency hospital 15 minutes ago so now I have to go back.

Thats nearly 6 weeks I have been hobbling around with this witch occasional walks with the dogs of up to a km!

Have been in emergency for 4 hours. Several rounds of Xrays and now I’m in moonboot with crutches, awaiting surgical assessment for a plate across the broken bit. Even if I don’t have surgery it’s zero weight on that foot for 7 weeks. I can’t believe for the last 6 weeks I’ve been walking dogs, shifting furniture, climbing ladders etc

At least you have an identifiable reason for the pain. Having a plate inserted sounds a bit radical, but if it solves the problem, go for it.
Hope it all works out OK for you, Bob.

I hope that they did the correct foot, Bob!

    Wishing you a speedier recovery.

    Thanks Folks.

Just got back from Charlies emergency.

Fracture is across the "medial malleolus ( knob protruding from the lower end of the tibia) and is significant.
Fairly common break amongst older folks apparently.
After 5 hours got sent home in a moonboot and a walker - I was deemed "too old and unstable" on crutches.

    Screen Shot 2020-01-31 at 8.15.05 pm.jpg

Have to stay off some diabetes meds for a few days and the go back on Monday for an assessment to have a plate inserted across the fracture.
If they proceed will have surgery immediately.
Either way, it's 7 weeks in a cast or moonboot and zero weight bearing during that time.
Doc says taking cortisone over the last few years might have produced some bone thinning and is why he recommends a plate otherwise it's likely to break again

Not happy but at least I know what it is.

Far out mate that's rough, hope it heals quick! I'm only 10 minutes away, if you need help with anything while you're off the foot let me know. You've always been so generous helping me out with stuff, it's only fair I return the favour.

    Thanks Guys much appreciated.

Some good news for a change.

A senior bone specialist called around lunchtime and recommends no surgery.
He’s looked at my CT scans and reckons my bone density is good and I should heal with just a moon boot for 6 weeks.
I got the feeling that the younger bone surgeon I saw yesterday who was very personable but really keen on promoting the surgery was a bit on the “gung ho” side. I thought maybe he needs the practice or they have to keep their beds full or something?

I mentioned to my GP by email this morning about . . . .being sent home with a walker as I was deemed "too unstable and old" to use crutches! and he sympathised (he’s my age) and asked if I would I like to try some crutches out so he brought me around a set of caliper type.
They are slightly easier to use than the walker in confined spaces like around the house, but they do challenge the old arm/shoulder muscles and I can’t walk far in them without getting up a sweat.

    Good news indeed Bob
These broken bone pain things are a real prob. My mum (88 last month) has had residual pain from bowel cancer surgery about 7 years ago. In July she started getting more pain and they just upped the doses. No good. After 2 months they put her in hospital- broken her pelvis!
No surgery possible, just months of doing as little as she can without going nuts, while her bones mend (which they don’t do quickly).
But she battles on and continues to look after herself, with a bit of cleaning and gardening help, in the family home.
    Cheers
