Apparently, with AZ you are more likely to get sick after the first shot and the reverse for the mrna one

This is largely true, but some people (as always) exaggerate the reaction. Locally we've had several guys demanding sick notes to get off work only minutes after getting the Pfizer jab. One claimed his arm was "paralysed" but changed that to "a bit tingly" when told he should get to hospital ASAP. We also had a case of a guy with a "very bad headache" after the AZ jab in the morning, who later turned out to have gone to the pub for some time straight after the jab, and then fallen asleep in the garden on the sunniest day of the year so far. This only was discovered after he was asked whether the AZ also caused his sunburn.......

Had my second dose of Pfizer on Tuesday, didn’t feel great for a couple of days afterwards. Had a headache and generally was tired for a couple of days.

On the positive side, at least it feels like I have taken the initiative and am gaining some degree of control over the situation.

    For clarity
Wasn't until a week after my first jab(Pfizer)
    That I experienced side effects
That being a headache for 2 days
Nothing too nasty but a headache all the same
    That said...

My understanding is that the first AZ jab will likely, but not necessarily, produce some side effects but the second jab will probably not. The Pfizer jab works the other way around with the second shot more likely to produce a mild reaction

However, this is not set in concrete. we have both had two AZ shots now. Within twelve hours I experienced mild flu symptoms which was mainly aching limbs. it subsided after another twelve to twenty four hours. SWMBO felt nothing until about five days later when it kicked in with a vengeance.

For the second shot i experienced nothing other than a mild ache at the injection point in my arm: Inconsequential. SWMBO was sick for ten days with a nasty cold and the side effect kicked in within twelve hours this time. I suspect she does not react well to vaccines. I am mentioning this to indicate how people can react differently and how it may depart from what is expected. My belief is that people should be vaccinated unless there is a very good reason not to.

Time will probably be the best evidence, but there is increasing information that an alarming number of people have onging health repercussions after contracting covid-19 and the initial effects have gone. Listening to an ABC programme yesterday, these after effects were as high as one in three people and that included mental problems as well as physical. That seemed alarmingly high to me, but as I said, time will tell. It all comes within the term "Long Covid."

Had my first AZ last Wed. Felt a bit off until about midday next day. Then felt very tired and had a bit of a temp. Friday felt better, but got tired in afternoon. Sat was feeling normal, and no dramas since.

Yesterday I got my 3rd shot , being a booster shot because of my health status.

This was Pfizer not the Astra Zenica I received previously. Bit of a sore arm during the night but easing again now.

Glad to have the booster as it will keep on protecting my life.

    Peter.

Side effects are largely a result of imagination and panic. If you listen to most people waiting to get a vaccination, they talk themselves into getting a reaction, asking everyone what their reaction was and mimicking it.

I was in defence for 25 years, on rookies they gave all us rookies dozens of jabs, then of course there were followups afterwards. When I went overseas, they gave me everything you could think of.

Vaccinations were spread out over a few days on rookies, there were so many of them. A couple of fellows passed out as soon as they saw the needle, another couple had to be sat down, another fell on the floor and was admitted to hospital. When he woke up, the nurse came in with every vaccine and gave him the lot there and then.

Of all the vaccinations I've had, including those as a kid, I never got so much as a sore arm or a lump where the vaccine was injected. Side effects from vaccines are largely brought on by the individuals mindset, they talk themselves into it!

What it comes down to is, people are basically stupid!

That's not actually the case. There are most definitely people who do indeed fake reactions - when the army did its vax clinic in town we had people walking directly from the clinic to the pharmacy and asking for a medical certificate to get them out of work. I also know of people who, after AZ, felt too sick to get off the couch and yet made miraculous recoveries when they saw the need.

But there are also people who have genuine reactions, varying between feeling "a bit off", through 24-36 hours of flu-like symptoms, and all the way up to hospitalisation.

If you've never had a reaction then you're lucky. I've had the same lack of reaction with almost every vaccination, but my first AZ gave me 24 hours of cold/flu (feeling hot, weak, not quite "right"). The second AZ I didn't even notice. With Pfizer it's more usual to feel unwell after the second dose.....

I do have to say that our pharmacy has done hundreds of Covid vaccinations, and you can often pick the people who will, um, "exaggerate" the side effects. But there's been a fair number of people who normally "soldier on" (many of them get 'flu shots etc. every year without problems) but who have come back a few days later and reported feeling bad after the covid needle...

I think you may in part be referring to psychosomatic scenarios. I guess it is a point of debate whether psychosomatic illness is real or not and one that I am certainly not qualified to explain. There are also those who imagine things because of suggestion and there are those who deliberately fake responses because of another agenda (wanting a day off work for example), but there are definitely those that experience some effect and those that are severely affected by the vaccination. See my post #98 for our experience. I was on night shift at the time and just attributed my mild symptoms to the night shift "ebb" and it was literally as dawn broke that I realised I had undergone a very slight side effect.

When you speak of the military rookies, we have to assume that this is a select group of people who are in broad generalisations a little bit more "robust" than the average person on the street. I have a BIL who faced with having his arm amputated because of infection poured neat Milton onto the wound, which had the effect of rinsing maggots through the two bones of his forearm. He did have the good grace to pas out from this little episode, but on reawakening saw that there had been a positive result and did it again! His arm began to heal and the doctor asked what he had done. He explained and the doctor said he didn't want to know, but well done. The BIL, who still has his arm incidentally, is one of the most stoical people I know, but his sister (my wife) while being no wilting lily, is most certainly not in this category and comes close to fainting at the sight of needles. When she passed out at the blood bank many years ago they said thank for volunteering, but never come back: This is not for you.

My point is that the human race has a wide range of tolerances, but I would agree that today we are relatively "soft' compared to our ancestors one hundred years ago who dealt with the Spanish Flu, for example.

Both SWMBO and I had our first AZ jabs in the morning. That evening when we retired we were congratulating ourselves for being superior human beings having zero side effects. Overnight we both had mild nausea and headaches but neither severe enough to warrant medication.

    Pride goes before a fall.
