    Thumbs up Need a knee

Following two arthroscopy operations on my knee I am now booked in for a replacement knee tomorrow.
The hospital rang me two days ago to confirm a couple of details and being totally honest I admitted that
I had a throat infection two weeks ago, went to the doctor, got antibiotics and all was now ok.
That was not acceptable, the hospital ordered me to have the Coronavirus check and let them know the result.
That was 5pm Friday, I had the Coronavirus check at 6.30pm but was told it could be Monday or Tuesday to get the result.
Of course that was of no benefit as I am due at the hospital at 7.30am on Monday.
I began thumping the table but to no avail. I have had a sleepless night worrying about the immediate future.
All ok now. Got a message on my mobile that tests prove "Negative".

I think I am now on a winning streak. I have had my appendix, tonsils and gallbladder removed and not replaced
but this time it looks like I am getting something back for a change.

My wife had both knees done, six months apart, four years ago and highly successful. It is important that you stick to the rehab program to ensure positive results.
    Trust it goes well.

good luck. Dad (now in his 70s, i'm in my 40s) had his knee done two years ago after putting it off all his life. He had one knee surgery before arthroscopy, and another one on the same knee some time later with arthroscopic and it wasn't causing him pain but when he stood, it lacked lateral stability and one leg would bend in and touch the other.

He took the physical therapy as a challenge and sailed right through it rather than dragging his feet and he's never regretted anything other than a short bout of OIC (!!).

Now 4 months since surgery. Not really happy with results. Knee feels swollen and restricted in movement.
Cannot bend it to the angle required by the surgeon. Not particularly painful, can walk without a crutch but
sometimes take it with me if I have to climb steps and to keep my balance.
Stiffens up quickly and needs a few steps to loosen up. Last couple of weeks have noticed a "clunking"
in the knee which is felt up into my neck. Not painful but annoying. Have been doing my exercises
but surgeon said it may take 12 months to settle down eventually.

    Gday Al

I hope the recuperation goes well with a good result.
Sorting out your emails will keep you occupied.
    Good luck with both

Sorry to hear it has not worked out (so far). I do hope things improved for you. Ive watched my sister and 3 blokes at the mens shed go through knee replacement and after 12 months two are OK and 2 are not. My doc suggested I replace my right knee nearly 2 years ago but instead I opted for leg muscle strengthening exercises which has sort of worked. Well, the pain seems to have reduced without using any meds. I realise this won't work if your knees are too far gone and I have resigned myself to getting the knee replacement some time in the future.

    Hi Allan,

Sad to hear that your TKR is not the best. I have recently had all sorts of trials and tribulations with my TKR, the outcomes are not always great.

I had mine replaced exactly 2 years ago today at 52. The surgery went okay, I managed 90deg bend before leaving hospital and seemed on track.

At six weeks the stitching broke slightly and I had an infection at the opening. No evidence it went through to the joint but may have.

This reduced the degree of flex and I went back in for a manipulation under anaesthesia and they gained 120deg. Another six months of rehab and it was going ok, back to work part time.

At the eight month mark the pain in the knee, along with swelling increased. I have been able to maintain the 120deg of bend, however after just a half hour or so of being up of a morning it starts to swell and the pain returns. Driving becomes painful after about 20mins.

I had investigative surgery in October last year and the joint is fine, however there is scar tissue on both sides of the inside of the knee capsule. They are putting the pain down to neurogenic or parasympathetic nervous system issues from the multiple surgeries over the years, culminating in the manipulation.

I have been seeing a pain specialist and an OT and their opinion is that the knee thinks it is constantly injured, so as I use it, the nerves say stop, send pain and fluid to make it swell.

Not sure where it will end but keep plugging away. My left knee will probably last another 10yrs, that will be a hard decision. From what I have read, there is about a 20% group who do not fare well after TKR. Just sounds like we are in that group.

    Has your surgeon suggested manipulation?

Some pretty advanced medicine there! Didn't know they often transplanted an appendix/gall bladder

Just returned from seeing the surgeon which is now 12 months from when the operation took place.
My knee is still swollen and feels like it is permanently bandaged. Movement not too bad but cannot
extend it fully without some pain. Every step I take is accompanied by a "clunk" in the side of my
neck but is not painful. The surgeon says about 1 in 10 patients have the same problem.
He wants to open me up and insert some "plastic" but I am not willing to.

    Enough is enough.

    Alan
