Odd symptoms - don’t ignore.
Hi everyone, my wife has just been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer which effects approx five people per million and this on top of her Parkinson’s has knocked us for a six. Polycythemia Vera is incurable but can be manageable dependent on the stage of the disease giving a life expectancy anywhere between 2 to 15 years.
This disease is often found during a full blood screen with the patient sometime having no symptoms but those to look out for are varied and some somewhat unusual. You may have some or none of the listed.
A red flush of the nose and cheeks.
Sore joints in the big toes, gout like pain
Abdominal pain right side below ribs.
Fatigue, malaise
Shortness of breath
Nausea
Recurring, persistent infections
Itchiness after showering or bathing.
Treatments include venesection on a consistent basis to reduce red blood cells, aspirin/warfarin to thin the blood and help to prevent clotting, chemotherapy and drug treatments for the various symptoms, possible bone marrow transplant etc.
please do not ignore any of the above symptoms if you have them, a full blood screen with a Jak2 gene test will give a diagnosis, a bone marrow biopsy will give an estimation of the disease stage.
Cheers

Almost the same symptoms as lupus.
Fascinating what can be found in blood tests now.
