Not really true. Here is a link to BlueScope Steel warranties. Some are very restrictive and certainly not lifetime warranties.

How do I know? I worked for them for eleven years both as a rep and a branch manager.
If the paint is actually faulty they will replace the roof but it must be within the time specified.
If the paint has prematurely faded or discolored they will only opt to repaint it and then they will want to use specific contractors.
As Woodlee says a lot of councils are refusing to allow sheds converted or specifically designed into homes especially in five acre sub-divisions.

I heard the other day that 'colorbond' (not sure if the brand or generic steel roofing) had problems with some new sunscreens dripping off hot foreheads and staining them.
