Default keeping termites OUT! Any suggestions.??

    Hi there.
I have a large property 3 hours west of brisbane and over the years i havent been able to keep the termites from eating my wood! All my efforts of creosote, sump oil etc have all been in vain.. they are hungry buggers out there and seem to go to all extremes to get to some food. hardwood or pine doesnt matter! they eat the lot

i am in the planning stages of building a small (6x3) enclosed self standing deck.. similar to a gazebo i suppose..
i am trying to do things on the cheap, and therefore steel is out of the question due to price, and workability of it out there with no power!

i once went over an old bushies house and noticed he had his table legs sitting in 4 old bake bean cans filled with sump oil... Upon enquiring, he informed me that it kept the ants off his bloody food... which gave me an idea to keep termites out of my wood.

I will sink my galvanisted stirrups into a concrete footing. make up some cups that i will sikaflex around the "posts" of the stirrups and fill it with sump oil..

my theory in this is that the termites sure as hell wont bridge a gap over the top of a cup full of sump oil?? What do you rekon?

I head out there every few weeks so topping up the sump oil wont be a big deal.

Please find attached a diagram of what i am planning..

I would appreciate anyones suggestions... improvements.. comments.. or critism

    Thanks.

I imagine that'll keep subterranian termites out provided you keep the cans clean of leaves etc but if you're going to go around filling the cans with sump oil can you instead just check for trails each time and knock them off. Depends how quick they move I guess and how likely it is for the 3 weeks to stretch to longer periods. Generally they get discourage with repeated distubance but that may be different up your way.

I thought around Brissy there were non subterranian termites that could live in the timber itself. Is that only on the coast where it's more humid.

I know someone who used two-stroke fuel, but the termites came on motor bikes after hat. LOL.

I like your idea, but I agree that the leaves will be a problem. Maybe a mouse wire lid to slip over and recessed into the oil? This could be lifted up to clear the leaves off. The termites will keep away from sump oil anyhow I hope, so will other ants and crawlies. They are not easily deterred sadly.

If termites are such an issue then in the long term steel (durgal) posts, bearers and joists are the only way to go with the decking being a composite material like Correctdeck.

All steel components could be fabricated off site and then tek screwed/assembled on site with the use of a generator to supply power or for that matter the whole lot done on site with a generator.

There is a timber called Alaskan Yellow Cedar (AYC), Bunnings here in WA sell it, it smells like and according to the guff on it has the same insect repelling properties as Western Red Cedar. I've used the AYC as noggings in my steel framed house where I had to pick up items that were fixed to the walls after sheeting.

If the AYC is avalible in you neck of the woods get some and do a test by wacking a piece in the ground along side another bit of timber that you know will be eaten and see what happens, they would have to remain undisturbed for awhile.

But in all seriousness go steel its not that difficult.

Had the local exterminator out after I found the little buggers eating my house.
He suggested spraying Bifenthrin in a trench around the house. Its an insecticide.
You can buy it yourself from http://www.davidgray.com.au/products...secticide.html

Not sure of the concentration required for termites - check this with them.
Should last a few years in the soil as it's supposed to be able to bind with the soil structure.
Forget the baits and the expensive chemicals intended to kill the nests by transfer.
