I used to live in Rocky and it well known that everything was dearer in Rocky than Mackay. The fuel was always 6 or 7c a litre dearer and the price of groceries was a bit more as well.
As Grahame said, there is 2 seasons in Mackay - hot and humid and warm and pleasant. Rocky has 4 seasons - very hot and dry, warm and pleasant, cool and pleasant, and brass monkey winters.
Yeppoon and Emu park have gone ahead in leaps and bounds in the last few years and they are somewhere I would look at. Also would look at the beach suburbs around Mackay as there are a few really nice spots. The thing about Mackay is that it is close to lots of great areas such as the whitsundaes and places like Eungella.(rainforest)
Really depends on what life style you want to live I suppose.

The house prices have gone down a bit and are not too bad

The average house on average block runs between 350 to 380K and shopping about same as elsewhere and we are pay $1.33 to $1.37 for fuel.

No but I used to hitchhike between Brissy and Townsville a lot when I was going to Uni.

Hitching between Rocky and Mackay was very hard. The stretch between Marlborough and Sarina was colloquially called the Murder Mile...200 klm with one gas station in between ...real Wolf Creek stuff.

No one would pick you up...and when anyone did you were afraid that it would be your last ride.

I got stuck in Rocky for 3 days once trying to get a lift north. Slept under that bridge that leads out of town and I got shat on by a flying fox.

So yeah, Rockys a great place....................to leave.

No! not when it distills ethanol.
The mill and and distillery are side by side.I have visited apprentices in the mill. There was never any mention of consumable alcohol distilled there. If there was grog there or nearby,I am sure they would know about it,believe me.

I know some people will drink anything alcoholic ,but it is a bit rough for me!
In any case the place concerned is at Sarina 40kms south of us.

Mackay is right on the coast, Rocky has a bloody big hill between it & the coast.

    Mackay is wetter.

    Rocky is dryer.

Mackay has a sea breeze in summer.

    Rocky has colder winters.

Both of them have 961,328 motels, all of them (except the cockroach trap near the salt pan) are full when you want one.

Mackay has the Eungalas (high country inland) to escape to if you want a cabin with a fire in winter.

Ta, I couldn't remember how to spell it so I Googled it.... try it, put Eungala into a google search & click on Australia.

PS. I like platypus country, that is why I live where I live, we have them in our dam.

I had to look up the spelling in the phone book. Even worse at the pronunciation. apparently its (Young- gala ).

Took the kids up there when they were younger .I got some photos of a young one one in shallow water from a meter a way.Once in a lifetime stuff. Just love platypui.

There you go Dazzler if your a platypuses watcher Mackay is the place for you.

If on the other hand fiberglass bulls are more to your liking.....

As I originally said - not much of a choice, I'd pick Bowen over those two...and if you have ever been to Bowen you will know how sad that statement is.

My sincerest apologies to all those reader who actually live in those parts

    Thanks all

he is off up that way in a few weeks. Will post his decision.

Years ago I drove from canberra to cairns and felt a little stupid cause i expected the trip to be jungle all the way....coconuts , bikini girls, monkeys and stuff.

    Amazing how unjungly it is.

I've done a few fear and loathing trips up there ..and I think I saw some monkey girls wearing coconut bikini's...does that count?

Come to think of it that was probably just Cairns during the tourist season.

I stayed in a cabin at Camelia, it was OK. and the proprietor had an accent just like Crocodile Dundee.
