    Default Preventing solar energiser theft

Hi there - my wife and I have a rural section on the Macleay R and are re-vegetating with native trees. We fence these off with solar electric fencing to keep the cattle out.

We recently had an expensive Speedrite solar energiser stolen from a tree compound. As their red colour was so obvious I had even painted it black!

Does anyone know of a foolproof way of preventing or deterring theft of these energisers?

We have come up with one system which I will share once I have taken some pics but would welcome ideas, thanks.

    Regards, Sean

Short of locking up the energiser and putting the panel on a high metal post, I can't think of a foolproof method to prevent theft but if you can make it less visible or less accessible that will help. Depending on the model, you may have the option of running it off a 12 volt car battery without the visible and valuable solar panel. Swap the battery with a freshly charged one every few days. As long as cattle have plenty of feed they won't test the fence too much so low power would do. Presuming the thief understands electric fencing, there isn't a way to use an electric shock to prevent theft. Issuing challenges or making them cranky with a shock could be counter productive. If there is 240 volt power within a kilometre across your own or a helpful neighbour's land then running a hot wire on an existing fence or stringing one up high on trees or posts could be a good option. Good luck.

I have no association, or experience with this mob but they may be worth a look.
Spypoint Australia outdoor security cameras, covert no glow, no visible flash infrared cameras, camera traps and wireless digital surveillance cameras for wildlife monitoring, covert outdoor cameras. Property, farm and livestock surveillance cameras,

My BIL had a problem with stuff going walking out of a machinery shed on his farm, he got something similar set up.
It takes a series of stills when it is triggered rather than a constant video.

Signs & a dummy camera on a very tall pole may also do the trick.

thanks for responses and ideas - appreciated. I am trying to avoid cameras and stuff. Also I am not living on the farm so battery power and swapping them out is not feasible.

What I have come up with so far is buying $99 solar energiser cheapies on eBay (some come with a 3 year guarantee and according to our tests kick out in excess of 5Kv which is enough to give stock a jolt) and cutting a square hole in a fat post and locating them in there with only the solar panel (very small) protruding at the requisite angle from the top. From any sort of distance it is very hard to distinguish from other fence posts and so may do the trick? Also I am using awkward screws to attach the energiser to the post - they will need a battery operated wrench with requisite heads to get them off. Time will tell. . . . pics to follow as soon as I can get them.

    regards, Sean
