My beautiful mate, Missy
Its a very, very sad time for me. On Friday the 21st of Feb I have to have my sweet girl put to sleep. Surgery, medication and diet could not defeat her terrible case of osteoarthritis in her spine and leg joints. She is unable to pee or poo or do the things dogs do. She is in constant pain and is very depressed. She just lays on my bed staring into space and at me with no spark in her beautiful eyes. I've had her since she was 8 weeks old and she is now only 10 years old. It's all happened in the past 12 months and I'm devastated. She has been my constant companion and we've enjoyed 2 big road trips to FNQ in her short life. I hold her at night to give some comfort and it cuts my heart to see her like this, I can't stop crying for her so its just a very sad time. She is more precious to me than my own family.
Anyway I just wanted to tell you about my sweet Jack Russell, Missy and how I will miss her so very, very much.
Thanks for reading.Mike

Sorry to hear of your loss Mike.
They are certainly family members, our pets.
I can still remember the day I had to put down my 14 year old Lab, still can bring a tear to my eye if I dwell on it too long.Brad.

i feel for you. Such a hard thing. I've only ever been around on the periphery (as a kid) or as a more distant spectator (family dogs, when I'd not been a part of their daily lives), but I know its just a ticking time bomb, with two 10 year old puppers in our lives now.
In times when it is less raw I'm sure you'll be able to reflect on those two road trips with much fondness.

I feel for you, I lost my best mate back in 2013, and it still hurts thinking about him.
To help you along, I found a lovely little poem in Remembrance of your beautiful mate, Missy.

Kyrn,
have just read this, mate for a start its ok to cry, in fact its one of lifes gifts to be able to cry, its something that in a quirky way helps share the pain and hurt.
Still to this day remember at the age of 21 the mess I was in when my first dog....but you know what Iam saying.
There is some strange connection with a dog that 'man' has, dont need to talk with them but they read your mind and feelings, they take the good and bad days and still love unconditionally.
Feel for ya mate.I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

I have a good news update on Missy. Two days before she was due to be put to sleep and just after I posted the original post here, my vet rang me late at night to say she had consulted with some of her colleagues on Missy's condition.
It was agreed that as her organs and general health was very good, it would be better to postpone her end and place her on an intensive steroid treatment program. I delivered Missy to my vet the day before her due passing.
My wonderful, wonderful dedicated vet took her home for 5 days and started her on the steroids. On Sunday I received a short video, by sms from my vet, of Missy walking and peeing on her own. I was over the moon as you can imagine.
Today, Tuesday, I collected her from my vet and she walked the short distance to my van on her own. She's eating like a horse (well, a Shetland anyway) and peeing and pooing comfortably. My vet has given no guarantees about the medium to long term but we'll be working together to make sure that whatever time she has left is as normal and comfortable as possible. Due to her debilitating degenerative osteoarthritis in her spine she won't ever run or jump again but to be able to at least walk is great.
So, I really appreciate the very kind words from you all and just be aware, that in what was a very dark time for me, the support was vital.
Cheers

This is an update on my beautiful Jack Russell mate, Missy. Back in Feb I posted that she had a reprieve from euthanasia due to the wonderful work of the vets at BAW BAW PAWS here in my hometown. At the time they told me that I should enjoy her for the extra 6 months or so I had with her.
Well I’m very, very sad to report that she is now unable to be a little dog anymore so she is being put to sleep Thursday this week. She can’t stand to pee or poo Anymore and she whimpers in pain when I pick her up. I’m in a miserable place as type this but I have to do what’s best for her. Yesterday (Monday) me and a good friend took Missy in our campers up to Walhalla for our last night away together. She couldn’t run around or walk so we took turns carrying her through the bush. She’s grossly overweight from the cortisone she’s had everyday since Feb so that hasn’t helped except to give her some limited mobility.
Anyway, sorry to waffle on but I live alone with Missy and just wanted to tell someone about her. I love her very much and don’t know what I’ll do when she’s gone. It’s all very, very sad.
thanks for reading this,
bye for now.
