My best mate
Sad day in our house ,we had to have our Alaskan Husky put down today .
18 months ago I found him curled up on our back door step .He didnt want to leave ,he had no collar or rego disc .I took him to the vet and had him checked out , and had his injections done .I then went to the council and registered him in my name . I named him Sitka ,after the old capital of the State of Alaska
He has been my constant companion since and boy do I miss him already . I'm glad he chose us for his new family ,for the short time he was with us he bought much joy and companionship to us .
A week ago Sunday past he got clobbered by a car ,and has been fighting the fight of his life ,but today it was more than I could bear to see him suffer another minute so I had to do the best thing I could do for my mate.
I can't blame the driver , but blame myself ,In a moment of forgetfulness I failed to shut the gate ,he was not a street wise dog and never went out the gate unless on a lead when we went walking .
I brought him home in the ute ( his favourite ride ), and buried him under the big McArthur palm where he used to lay on hot days .
Thanks mate ."Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend ,inside a dog it's too dark to read"

I feel for you Woodlee, there is something very special in the unwaivering friendship offered by a good dog. He is a great looking dog and certainly looks happy.
I have a deaf and extremely arthritic kelpie who is 16. 3 years ago I was told by a vet he only had weeks to go as he had a growth in his snout, I cried all day, he is still hanging around getting under my feet and becomming more insollent and stubborn by the day. I dread the day I have to take that trip to the vet.

Took that drive about 6 months ago myself and I feel for you Woodlee. Good on you for giving him a good home for as long as you had him.

I have had to have two best mates put down so I know how you feel. They don't ask for much and give you that big welcome when you get home.
Two weeks ago the boy I have now jumped a six foot gate then a six foot asbestos fence and was missing for probably four hours before I got home. It was another three hours before I found him but I wasn't going to give up looking. Only a dog owner understands.
You'll never replace him as each one is special but a new dog will give you a lot of pleasure. I share your grief.Cheers,
Rod

We are currently renting and not allowed big pets so we have always had a cockatiel who greets us when we come in and talk to while about in the house and one day he sadly died, and it may be different for you but we found ourselves more upset each time we talked to our bird that wasn't there. it's a shock to continually remind yourself that they're not there anymore. If you do decide to adopt another friend you could check out www.winterpaws.com.au they specialise in huskies and malamutes.

Sorry to hear Kev. I had to do that same thing a few weeks ago and it is still raw but in a different way. Like Meggles said, the hard part is remembering all their funny habits and rituals which are no longer there.
Eventually though all you will remember are the good times, chin up.I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

well if that didn't help, this might. I have had alot of things 2 deal with and sometimes the only thing that helped was this prayer (mind you, I'm not religious)
Learnt this one the hard way.
Grant me the serenity
to change that which i can
to accept that which i can not
and the wisdom to know the difference
you can NOT change the fact that you left the gate open,
you CAN fix your gate soz it shuts automatically for when you get your next puppy.
sorry if it cam out harsh, not meant to.

Been a week since I had him put to sleep and let me tell you the weekend was the hardest of all , I spent both days in my shed doing a couple of small projects ,ocassionally I would turn and look down to check on my mate ,and my heart would sink when I realized he wasn't there .His meals times are the same , he would remind me at exactly six o'clock each day that its time for dinner ,some times just a wet nose on the back of the leg or a gentle touch with a lifted paw , other times he would "speak " as only a Huskie or Malamute can.
Birds I can also understand , I used to breed Cocktiels , Rosellas and budgies a few years ago ,I had one hand raised Cocatiel ,that could talk a house down and swear like a trooper ,he is still missed even though it's been five or six years since he died.
Thanks for the link I will keep it bookmarked for future reference .I will be getting another huskie , but not directly ,although I have three that I'm looking at this week , no guarantee that I will take one though.
