Tricky timber ID please
Hello, I got this board off an old friend who in the past did a lot of work with Northern silky oak.
He doesn't know what the timber is, but it is much harder and a lot heavier than silky oak. He says it is murder on the sharp edges of tools, and swears it is not silky oak, despite the similarities.
When I was dressing it on the jointer today, I ended up with a terrible taste in my mouth for a few hours afterwards - silly bugger didn't wear his dust mask, in too much of a hurry as usual
Can anyone please advise what timber it might be?

+1 Beefwood. Bugger of a stuff to work. Hard on tools, heavy, dusty.
There are beefwood seats in Parliament house in Canberra. Lovely to see once it's finished.
I prefer some one else to do the work and finishing!!!

Thanks for this helpful info, everyone, much appreciated. I think I will be setting this board to one side for a long, long while Especially after reading TTIT's web site here
I have worked with kwila for a weather board mounting three brass plated weather gauges ( thermometer, barometer and hydrometer) , which also oozes resin, not unlike this beefwood I suppose. I ended up washing with metho and then a few coats of danish oil. Came up well, but after 4 years it is covered in small black spots up to 5mm diameter where the resin has come through, spoiling the appearance of it.regards,
