3m hardwood batten untreated unfinished timber selection?
Hi all.
I'm looking to use timber battens as enclosure around the underside of my Queenslander house which is currently being renovated. What I want to use is a mix of 100 x 19 and 38 x 50 (or similar size) rough sawn untreated ironbark and let it grey off as I love the weathered colour, and to avoid maintenance issues. I've also been offered blackbutt as it's about 2/3rds the cost of the ironbark. The max batten length will be just under 3m for the 100 x 19 and around 2.4m for the 38 x 50. Fixing spacings will be around 750 or 600. I'd have to get it fixed pretty quickly to avoid it bending like crazy I'd say.
Price I've been given is under $2 per metre for the blackbutt ex sawmill which I think is pretty good. I don't know how the blackbutt would go in terms of longevity or how it would grey off compared to the ironbark. I've also looked at some second hand hardwood off ebay but would need to mill it to size plus lengths vary, so purchasing new is preferable.
If anyone has any advice on timber selection and possible problems with my proposal I'd appreciate the input.
All the best,
Brad

All timber greys, you'll have a hard time telling between old ironbark and old blackbutt.
I spend to much time on the forum

Hi Brad,
I could cut ironbark for you at that price but I'm about 300km from you.

I'm in Brisbane, Indie.
If Crebra can't help, give me a call on 0401 225 804.We've got lots of ironbark and other class 1 timbers. I'll match $1000/cube green off saw for those sizes.Cheers,
Craig

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not ready yet for the timber but will be soon. I'm assuming that I'll have to fix the battens within a day or two of getting them or they'll be pretty bendy.
Being green, will they turn up straight?

Yes, they'll turn up straight and if they're properly stored they'll stay that way. This sort of application should be cut back-sawn, so any movement is likely to be either bow or cup, rather than spring. If you fix them properly they'll look great, but they will very likely need to be tightened up in a couple of months as the timber shrinks. You may also end up with a bit of checking/ splitting as they dry. This is normal and not much can be done about it, especially if you're not finishing the timber. Pre-drill the fixing holes to avoid actively splitting while fixing.
One thing to remember is that the fixings will likely cause the timber to blacken around them, although that will disappear under the grey once they weather.Cheers,
Craig
