    Default Advice needed

    Hi,

I have a few red gum slabs that got thrown in when I recently purchased a secondhand Woodwizz, the smallest one is: 3100 x 600 x 50.

I am wondering what the value of these woud be as a friend has just asked me for a quote for a redgum slab table and I am not sure what value to place on the timber.

They are pretty flat a couple of small cracks but nothing major, I was told they were cut over 10 years ago and have been stored in a dry shed since then.

    Any advice would be great.

always a tricky one.. All I can offer is to be mindful that Red gum is one of the most "restless" timbers we produce in Oz; doubly so if not kiln-dried. This means that if the finished object is placed where the atmospheric moisture (ie humidity) varies markedly throughout the year, the wood will move in one direction, then settle back in a different shape. This is fine for rustic designs, but if you are selling to a friend, and the finish is reasonably precise, you need to be aware of this long-term propensity.
My father had some truly ancient dry red-gum that he offered to Dattners, and they won't even look at it if it's not kiln-dried.

As was mentioned, to be sure thay realy need to be kiln dried ( preferably in a dehumidifier kiln ) to around 8 to 10 % and left sit 2 to 3 weeks after that to relax, Very inportant to seal all sides of finnished product to reduce the amount of moisture it can regain. I'm sure you would already know this. As for the price kd slabs are around $4400 pr cube depending on quality.
Folow these steps and you shouldn't have any probs.

Don't be afraid to have a go. Mal.
