Need advice on use of dying Hemlocks
Hey Everyone,
I would like some advice. I have a parcel with 30+ mature hemlocks on it. 2 years ago the trees began to show signs of suffering from the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. Due to the size and number of trees, any treatment was out of the question. Like thousands of other hemlocks in our state, these trees are lost. This spring only about 10% of each tree produced new growth.
I am going to have the trees taken down. I want advice on whether or not it is a good idea to have the trunks cleaned up and cut to length for a sawyer to cut into lumber for trim and non-structural elements. Are these trees a good candidate for this? Because of their condition over the last 2 years, I don't know the condition of the wood, whether it's green or dried or what.
Any advice or experience is appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill
Welcome
As most of the members on the board are in Australia they probably aren't familiar with your hemlock.
I'm not either but I'd say saw it and stack it up to dry as soon as possible. As long as the wood is still sound when you saw the logs it will be OK.
You could also check http://www.forestryforum.com which is US based and you will find forestors / loggers / sawyers familiar with your stuff.
Cheers
Ian
