Default Advice re condition of cedar in pic

I ran across this cedar hot tub on ebay and I don't know enough about cedar to assess the tub's condition from the pics. It's being sold as is - but the price (yeah, yeah go and outbid me!) is incredible.

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=110242569782

I'm a tad worried because the tub has been sitting dry for a couple of years according to the seller, and there appears to be some discolouration on the timber that I'm not sure about. Could be natural weathering, or it could be a problem.

Could someone have a look at the piccies and let me know your thoughts on the condition of the timber?

    Thanks

looks ok to me ,cedar when left to the elements will go a silvery colour, the inside looks fine, they usually leak for a little while till it swells slightly then its ok,would give a light sand then a good feed of oil,(couple of feeds) and good as new.....bob

I knew there was something odd about Incoming.
She obviously wants to be pickled on the outside too. I've heard on the grapevine that she is already being pickled from the inside from all the wine she consumes.

Sigh. It's not a party tub. I seek a spiritual experience , although the bush telegraph around here already has the word out that a tub is on the way, either being built or bought. I've already had several requests for invitations to suss it out. I've also had some rather oafish workmates making noises about overflow once The Bloke climbs in, and wondering if property values will go down or up, if anyone sees us in the nuddy.

It's hard to explain the meditative value of a hot tub to people who can't think above their navels!

Ok, so name something worthwhile above the navel.

I feel sorry for your 'bloke'.

There is a wooden tub in a house featured in Vogue living this month. The owners apparently imported it from Thailand.

No, sod it, it went for $1300. Someone put in a bid with only 22 seconds remaining. I hope the rotten thing leaks.

Looks like I will have to make one. I'm a busy little beaver at the moment, checking out construction techniques etc, and it's quite amazing how little information there is on the net with regards to building one. Plenty of information on adapting old plastic tanks etc, but no info on how to actually build a wooden tub. The best I've run across so far is a video on how to make a wooden bucket.

I'm looking at the possibility of spending a couple of days at a cooperage, just watching and asking questions - being a general pest.

There are some gorgeous tubs around to purchase, but I baulk at the $8000 price tag. Plus I've got to build a nice octagonal deck (probably free standing) to house the thing.

The tub's great thanks Incoming and it doesn't leak at all.....wait for the screams...Just joking really!

I half looked into this a while back and saved a link to some sites. Just spent 20 minutes trying to find where I saved the links to. I'll get back to you on that.

The design/construction I fancied was WRC and looked very similar to the one you wanted to buy. First of all you need to realise that a circle is only a series of straight lines. All your vertical staves are the straight lines. From memory the joins between the staves were nothing more than "bead and cove". I think that the floor was again just staves housed at each end into a cicumferencial groove (let-in) around the lower part of the vertival side staves.

The "bead and cove" joins allow for latitude during assembly. Keep the sides straight up and down (not tapered so no tricky calculations). You will need say 3 stainless straps to go around the tub and hold the staves together. They will need to be adjustable via a screw mechanism.

Sounds like robyn2839 knows much more about this than I. In the absence of further ideas that is how I would start off. I'll keep looking for thise links.

Thanks for that - that part had me worried. I was visualising trying to create a wedge shaped taper (trapezoid?) for the staves to enable the circular shape. I was mucking around with the outer and inner diameters and calculating the stave widths accordingly. The chances of a disaster were moderately high!

Bead and cove - thanks for that too. What I planned. I think I've been calling it a knuckle joint.
