Advice needed - timber veneer? Plywood? Sydney
I am an artist and would like to use timber instead of canvas to paint on. I want to use the timber grain as a part of the artwork.
I have no idea what sort of timber I should be looking at and where I can get it - I'm in Sydney. I'd want something with a thickness of about 3mm and with a nice grain and a mid colour - not dark or light.
I would like to get pieces of about 210 x 250mm cut to size with rounded corners. Would the timber supplier do this or would I have to find someone else to cut it? Initially I'd be looking at getting about 50 pieces.
Can anyone help with my novice queries? It would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

best bet is to pick up the yellow pages and find the closest Plywood distributer, such as a Mr PlyWood http://www.misterplywood.com.au and see what they can do. Most plywoods are a light colour, although you can get other timber laminates over MDF or particle board.
If I do not clearly express what I mean, it is either for the reason that having no conversational powers, I cannot express what I mean, or that having no meaning, I do not mean what I fail to express. Which, to the best of my belief, is not the case.

plywoods vary in grade which will affect the texture of the surface, some are left pretty much rough sanded for construction purposes through to finely sanded stuff for furniture, so it depend on what you're after. they take paints and other finished like any other piece of wood, but some experimenting might be need on your part to decide what you want. see if you can get some offcuts to play around with first.

Mr Plywood has a cut-to-size service, at least at their Hornsby outlet. Plywood has a long & honourable history as a surface for decorative painting running back at least into the 3 digit years AD/CE.

timber
You may want to consider red cedar.
I note some are in the NSW art gallery is painted on this timber, it is non oily and stable. Nolan? somone may confirm, but not unusual, if you want a red background that is. Other timbers could be white cedar, blackwood, perhaps a bit dark, palonia (white), white beech.
