    Default African Blackwood

I've been mooning over my new arrival.
    Some beautiful African Blackwood.
Thought I'd work a surface over to see how it comes up.
Nothing I have will touch it.
I even gave it bash with my 80grit Bosch ROS.

    Any suggestions?
    Cheers

I'll give it some thought (as to what I would take as a trade) and let you know. Will post a pic of the stuff when I get another minute.

That sounds quite an unusually hard batch. The last time I visited Cape Town, about two years ago now, there was Blackwood everywhere - used like cheap pine for everything. If it were that hard then I cannot imagine it being used this way.

Beautiful wood - I was trying to work out how to get some home.

But of course, none of this helps you. I know ... send it to me and I'll plane it down!

    Regards from Perth

G'day Derek. I got it from a guy in Perth who imports African timber. Great bloke to deal with. Very helpful. He said it was also called Mpingo which is excellent for woodwind instruments and apparently much sought after by turners. The stuff I have is almost black with fine white streaks through it. I got 12 pieces 300mm x 100mm x 12mm for about 60 bucks plus freight from Perth.

G'day Reeves. The stuff is only 10mm thick unfinished. I don't know whether thats any good for your purposes but your're welcome to a bit of it. As for trade. I'm interested in exotics for small boxes (boring I know but thats what I like) one of the oaks or one of the desert timbers which you think might be suitable. What secret things have you got. I already have some Gidgee and Ironbark. Is there a site where I can see pics of the stuff you mentioned or can you post some pics so I can have a decko?
    Cheers
