Default African blackwood and african olive wood

    hi all

I have some pieces of African Blackwood and East African Olive for sale.

African Blackwood is also known as Dalbergia Melanoxylon and E.African Olive is Olea Hochstetteri.

Both are from Kenya and are rough sawn and in various sizes from 100mm x 100mm x 1000mm to small pieces suitable for Pen blanks (25mm x 25mm x 300mm). I'm quite happy to resize some of the larger pieces provided requests are reasonable and can discuss this with the client on a one on one basis.

While i'm based in PErth, i'm happy to send pieces across the Eastern States, as long as client pays for the freight. Pls bear in mind that both the Blackwood and the Olive have densities of approx 1500kg and 1200kg per cubic metre so freights costs may be high for larger size pieces.

All pieces hv been kiln dried and ends have been waxed to prevent splitting.

Pics are attached below for your convenience.

Interested parties can contact me on [email protected] or send PM through this forum.

    Cheers

    Solaris:
You have left off the information considered by many to be quite important (including me). What does the timber cost? Are you selling it at a cubic metre rate? I'm interested... Regards.

    Default re Pricing - apologies!!

    hi

    sorry about that.

    the Pricing is as follows

    BLACKWOOD

    For Pen Blanks - 25mm x 25mm x 300mm - $10 plus postage

For all other sizes - priced at $12,000 per cubic metre

    ie 100mm x 100mm x 1000mm - $120 plus postage (this is fairly heavy)
    ie 100mm x 50mm x 1000mm - $60 plus postage etc

Almost all the larger pieces have no sapwood on them and are pure heartwood.

    OLIVE WOOD

    Pen Blanks - 25mm x 25mm x 300mm - $7 plus postage

For all other sizes - priced at $8,000 per cubic metre

    ie 100mm x 100mm x 500mm - $40 plus postage

    Hope this clarifies the pricing.

    cheers

Look, I may be wrong here and feel free to ignore me, but if you mean $10 for a single blank, people are selling similar blanks for $11 for 5...

that is what i thought at first but look closer, 300mm long, thats enough for 2 pens and a letter opener, still a bit pricy but not as much as you made it out to be

also, they are a lot thicker, the ones you mentioned will be about 13/14mm these one are 25mm

    hi Cam

    thanks for that.

I see where you've coming from, however pls understand that the
Blackwood is a different ball game all together.

First, because it is by its very nature a very gnarly type of growth, its very hard to extract suitable pieces for commercial use that are of any decent length. For reasonable uses you are only really salvaging about 20-30% of the wood.

if memory serves, its current commercial value stands at about US$16K per cubic metre for processed pieces.

If you want more info on its uses and standing, you can visit

    http://www.blackwoodconservation.org/tree.html

    or

    http://www.farmforestline.com.au/pages/5.2.2_some.html

    Hope this clarifies things.

    cheers

    Hi

Looking at some of the pics it looks like they might include the pith (center) of the tree. Can you tell me if they do and what's the cracking like on the 100x100 blackwood.

Some do include the centre of the tree, however from what i can tell, on these, most of the cracking runs on the outside face of the blocks and about a 10-15mm in on one face or so.

about two thirds of the larger blocks are fine though.

For the blocks that have cracked, i'll resize them as i've recieved some requests for thinner pieces of the same height (100m) for box making etc.

i'll post some detailed pics shortly of a few larger blocks.

    cheers

    Solaris,

I wasn't talking about the big stuff (as I am not qualified to do so - I wouldn't have a clue what prices they should be).

However, I just wanted to point out the pen sized ones seem dear, mind you, as Stirlo points out, you blocks are quite a bit larger than your normal pen blank too!

Could probably cut 8 blanks from a single piece.

    Default some more pics

    hi all

as promised, here are some more pics. Hope fully these will address some of the questions that hv been raised earlier.

The following pics are of resized panels of approx 15mm x 100mm x 300mm - i ripped these because of requests for such panels for boxmaking etc.

    Most of the pieces below the 100 x 100 size are squared ie 75 x 75, 50 x 50 and 25 x 25.

I also have several smaller pieces that have both the heartwood and sapwood together on them.

    Cheers
