    Blackwood or Ebony, both come in dark browns to blacks. There is a way to telling the difference, just I can't remember, so hopefully one of our experts can shed some light

    I know blackwood doesn't float on water, which these carvings don't. Not sure about ebony.

    I'm pretty sure both sink, there is a difference is in the cutting/sanding, just not sure which is which.

    Now for my next question.. Would it be frowned upon to saw these up and use for something like a plane infill?
    They aren't really works of art and you find them all over for next to nothing.

    When I was overseas I looked at them as to cut them up for possible finial and pen blanks and other uses . Attached is a photo of an egg lamp I made, you will never guess where the ebony comes from
