    Default African Mahogany

Just wondering what thoughts are about African Mahogany, Khaya senegalensis, as a timber. I have quite a few very large trees and am considering their long term future.

Nice timber. Easy to work. Well worth the trouble.

When I lived in Weipa NQ, I managed to aquire a fair bit of this timber, also known as Khaya.
It was planted extensively throughout the township, probably in the 70's.
When I was there quite a few came down in storms, and were there for the taking, they ussually ended up in the greenwaste dump.
I slabbed up the ones that I got, it is beautiful timber, easy to work with.
It does move a bit while drying, so careful stickering is advised. I have a couple of slabs that were not stickered properly, they have warped quite badly.
Here are some links to a couple of projects I have used some of it for, I still have some left for further projects when I eventually get the time.

Thanks for all those responses. Now comes my next question. I'd like to get the trees felled by someone who could make use of the timber. There's nearly 50 trees with a lot of really good timber amongst it. Does anyone have any suggestions for this.

50 trees like those in the pics will yield alot of timber. Ive cut alot of Khaya sen. Super easy to cut and you can leave the heart in as it has a pith more than a heart like radiata. Not an easy timber to market unfortunately. Look up the Kimberly timber company, I cut it for them, they use it for host trees for sandalwood, might give you some ideas.

Thanks for that info. I just have to check out all options. Not all of it will be as good as what's in those photos but there is a lot of timber in it.

Quarter-saw the lot....instrument and furniture grade timber.. really is a classy wood this one....Nyasica is another species of Khaya...equally as pretty....beware anything back-sawn will more than likely twist/warp...you have some impressive trees there..
