alder is an imported timber so you are unlikely to get it cheap
Consider radiata pine or hoop pine

the playstands that are available from overseas, say they use the alder wood, im not to sure why this type of wood, i have been told that just pine is ok but it will mark very easily and i need something that is a light colour but would be a little stonger then just the cheap pine as she will use it for quite a few years
is radiata pine or the hoop pine similar in look to alder and wont show up to many dings marks etc from play?
We have no idea what would be best, we did just make a book shelf out of maple and was also thinking of this..
what would you all recommend instead? thanks alot..

If you want a light coloured timber that's durable, won't dent easily and very strong then consider Silver Ash. (The fact that I hope to be selling a bit of this stuff soon may make me somewhat biased, but I doubt that anyone would disagree with its suitability for the job . )

Ive never used alder, but would have to agree with Mick about Silver ash. It's a beautiful light colour, easy to work, much stronger and tougher than pine. One of my favourite timbers.
Don't know where you are, but you could have a look at it in Sydney or Melbourne at Mathews Timber. (But Mick will probably give you a better price ).

If fender make gituar bodies out of it ( i think thats correct) it must be available cheap somewhere in the world.

Trend Timbers near Windsor has a huge variety of timbers.
I take my ex-carpenter Dad out there every now and again, and he has a bit of fun finding timbers he's never heard of before.
