American Walnut(black)
In order to make myself feel better about the walnut I recently bought for $5.88(USD) a board foot(sry I don't know the metric equivilant) I was curious as to how much you in Australia would have to pay for the same .
Thanks,
RyanUSA
P.S.- Last summer I got to go to Australia and NZ with the People to People group and just wanted to say how much I liked it there!

Hi Ryan, and welcom aboard. I purchased some American walnut 12 months ago and the price worked out to be about AUD5,100 per cubic metre. The three pieces I purchased (in mm) were 1 @ 2500 x 150 x 25, 1 @ 2700 x 175 x 25, and 1 @ 2700 x 200 25 which turns out to be .036 of a cubic metre for AUD183.60. I have not done a conversion to see how this matches up with your price. Loverly timber to work with though.

Thanks for such a quick reply, so you measure timber in cubic metre instead of board foot?(learn something new everyday) I recently found a local lumberyard who mills and dries the lumber on the premises. Here in Kentucky walnut is everywhere I guess it shows I shoudln't take that for granted!

I just did all the math (which I cannot garuntee to be correct) and you paid $9.10 USD per board foot, which is (in inches) the length X width X thickness divided by 144, where as I paid $5.88 USD per board foot. So thanks now I feel better about my purchase. Now I wish I just had the funds to buy as much walnut as you did, lol.
Thanks again,

Ryan,
I cubic metre is 423.7 board feet. Despite having been brought up to use inches, I find the metric system far superior in ease of use. Pity the Americans still haven't seen the light.
I love using American cherry and walnut, but they are horribly expensive over here.
