Apple/Pear wood - Wanted
Hi All,
I am looking for some Apple or Pear wood (prefer apple) for a charcuterie board.
The finished board is to be ~650mm x 400mm.
Any suggestions where I can get some? I already have some from when I pruned our orchard, but it is still too wet to use and I do not have the luxury of time waiting for it to dry.
Are there any places that specialise in fruit wood like this?

George, I also like fruit wood, but have never seen it offered commercially. All that I have used in the past has been obtained opportunistically - being in the right place at the right time. I have used cherry, pear, apple, apricot, plum, peach, etc - all are nice.
Orchardists traditionally prune and also remove redundant trees after the fruit is harvested. Pruning is in mid autumn into winter. Wood should be available for the asking then, but orchardists now keep their trees very small so the size of the timber is quite limited. A lot of laminating would be needed to make a platter.
Occasionally, much larger "specimen" tree are felled or pruned by arborists in the older suburbs. These trees can be surprisingly large. It might be worth you talking to an arborist - the timber will not be free - its part of his business.

Hi Graeme,
Have not had any fortune in tracking down any apple/pear, so I will have to change tack.
I like fruit wood, especially for kitchen utensils, and have ‘harvested’ some species from our orchard over the years.
Have a look at the book matched apricot that I did in July. You can see the graft mark easily. Unfortunately I did not stack it properly and it twisted and split something terrible.

Understood.
But I already have both apple and pear wood that I harvested from our own smallish orchard this year. It is still wet.
What I originally wanted was dry wood for immediate use this side of Christmas.
Just as an aside, both woods carve really easily, and I highly recommend them.
Thanks for the advice.
