Default Tallow wood = Bench top ?

I Have found some old Tallow wood under a house, as I've been planning my new workbench, would this timber be OK? it seems oilly... and hard.

What else is it used for, other than house frames, that all i seem to be able to find.

    cheers

    G'day.

Tallowood is used for T&G flooring. It has been used in the past for dance floors due to it's oily surface.

Tallowood pencil round decking is also very good.
The tallowood that we get today for milling is the crap that has been left over from previous logging, and it is full of defects.

    Hooroo.

A bench top to dream of.
By the way, if you get a splinter in you then get it out quick, otherwise it stings like #@&* and will go mucky quicker than just about any other timber splinter.

There's something in the timber that makes a splinter wound get infected real quick, I dont know what it is but it stings like all #@$%.

As Graham said, the electricity industry uses Tallowwood for cross arms and power poles. In the near future, I'll be making a new workbench with Tallowwood bench top 50mm 2' thick, after I mill the cross arms to size. (4'x4' at the moment), so Termite I think you are on to a good thing, just don't get @#$% splinters!
