Aust red cedar
I ran into a bloke today at the local flea markets. He was selling slabs of silky oak finished to aroud 400gt starting at $80. Good size slabs and he told me he had a bit of red cedar lying about. He said the boards were about 120mm x 27mm. He wanted $15 per metre for it. He had none with him and I was thinking if this is one of those bargains I should grab. Not knowing the value of cedar, I was wondering if this is a good price or not?

Hi Blue
If they were nice boards I would be happy with the price but then I am not real hung up on bargaining

Using Blocklayers calculator it works out at about $4629.23 per cubic metre - more or less.

$15 a metre is a tad high, but would depend on how good the timber is. If it's full of faults like knots, etc., or badly bowed, twisted, etc., I'd say poke it; but if it was really nice, then grab it

I had never really looked at buying any of it so I had no real idea as to its value. I had heard different people coming up with all sorts of prices when I lived in Sydney so I never worried about it. When I spoke to this bloke yesterday it seemed like a good price. Just to confirm it I decided to run through the forum first. Thanks for the info.

I'de say too high , but with any Red Cedar it depends on the colour , also there is stuff they call makay cedar around , but about 2500 a cube is right.
