Australian Plywood Veneers
Hi all,
Am gearing up to build a TV console and will be using quality plywood for the cabinet/carcass. I'm not familiar with plywoods available on the Australian market but US-based woodworking resources often mention cherry and mahogany, for example, face veneers.
Is the plywood sold on the Aussie market available with different veneers? I typically see hoop pine veneer cited and luan seems to be common; I assume hoop pine would have a white/yellow colour and from what I understand Luan comes in white and red varieties.
If I wanted a jarrah veneer, would that exist? If I wanted a cherry or walnut veneer, would that be available in WA?
Many thanks in advance, as always,
Michael

Not sure about what is available commercially around Aus but I have seen sheets with various timber cover sheets.
There was a table maker in Margaret River that was making his own Jarrah laminated ply on light weight full sheet Paulownia ply using his own vacuum table. He may be interested in selling you some but probably at a price, the Paulownia ply isn't cheap to start with, but he may also do it to normal ply. I can remember his name, but if you are interested in pursuing this, send Dusteater a PM as he would remember him.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Tick, Tick, Tick .... not sure. To somewhat answer your questions there are veneered boards available .... exactly what you can get locally may be an issue. From what I have seen cost is also quite high so you may need to consider where you plan on using it.

Interesting--exactly what I had in mind, Sir, but I haven't seen anything similar in my WA-focused web searches. Definitely not cheap stuff so shipping is out of the question!
By way of a follow up question, any suggestions for stock standard plywood for a modest cabinet project? I came across a panel called Versiply over here. Do I need to go all the way to an A face or will B still be "nice" (somewhat subjective, I know!).

Thanks--have been meaning to pop out to Worldwide Timber Traders for ages so maybe time I did. They seem like a good bet.
I also contacted M&B Sales as they came up in another thread I found (http://www.mbsales.net.au/). They can do Jarrah veneers but wow it's expensive stuff--might be cheaper to go with solid wood! Or maybe not quite ;-)
12mm Down Graded Back -COST $238.70 + GST
12mm Good 2 Sides - COST $288.29 + GST
18mm Down Graded Back - COST $270.55 + GST
18mm Good 2 Sides - OUR COST $ 318.15 + GST
Lead Time 2 - 3 weeks
Thanks all for your thoughts, think I'm definitely onto some good sources. Am also looking at Cullity's in Balcatta as they're close to me and likely sell a nice cabinet grade ply with standard (i.e. non-Jarrah) veneers.

Hi not really an expert on the availability although I know you can get jarrah veneered mdf
Which would be my own peronal preferece to ply for carcase work.
I have a large selection of veneer myself if you are after anything in particular send me a PM.
You could try Worldwide timber traders in Bibra lake or contact David Howlett at the Perth wood school
As I have purchased some from him in the past.

Noticed Bunnings, of all places, had some small sheets of jarrah veneer ply when I was in yesterday. Didn't look vey thick and I didn't note the specs but it didn't seem particularly pricey...
Have also been out to both Cullity's in Balcatta and World Wide Timber Traders. Both sell Aussie hoop pine veneers and imported "marine" ply. Great service at each place--WWTT is HUGE and very busy. Cullity's was selling AA and BB faces whereas WWTT was selling an AC board (supposedly--I couldn't spot the difference between the A and the C face when I looked in the yard!). The WWTT sample board I was shown at reception also seemed to have more plys than I was expecting--more of a Baltic birch affair. Cullity's didn't have their stuff on hand to inspect. Anyway, between $175 and $205, if memory serves, for 18/19mm sheets.
WWTT also do a jarrah veneer. I was quoted a price per square metre but have yet to convert that cost into a per sheet cost... too scared!

PLY
Most plys or chipboard or MDF are essentially supplied as a structural material. They can be veneered in almost anything that you want , in most large/capital cities. The strata is of you're choice -so is the final veneering. If after exotic veneer-then will cost accordantly -asking for say to push a point , for ebony plywood with double ebony faces- will cost you appropriately-if you can find someone to do it.
Chose youre base to suit pourpouse -then pick veneer for looks.
Have spent MANY years dealing with chipboard veneer for precicely the cost/benifit factor.
By the way-current job on hand is Marine ply-Why -The job requires it for the porformance criteria.
Otherwise would probably be MDF veneer.
You know what it is for-decide- But don't be perdantic-if it dfon't really matter.
