    Question Bamboo

    G'day PPl,
    If you do not mind my calling Bamboo, timber;
are there m/any here who seriously work with Bamboo.
I've seen in other threads people seem to assume Bamboo is quite hollow.
    NOT Always

One of the "Must haves" would be a lathe

    Thanks

As for the Bamboo...the site says SOME of the shoots are quite solid, and the photos show a hole in the thick-walled stuff as well... what were you thinking of doing with it?

All bamboo that I have seen worked as "timber" has been milled from the wall and re-glued to size.

I have seen a couple of people have a go at turning various palm trunks though...the ones I have seen have been quite interesting....sort of hairy grungy things, OK to look at, but you wouldn't want to serve soup in them.

    Cheers,

    P

    Lightbulb Ideas

I've got the opertunity of a couple of wood Lathes.
One is an Elu, I never knew they Made Lathes.

If I do get one I'm thinking I might try some Mortise and Tennons
    BUT
Using round holes in the side of the Bamboo for the Cylindrical ended Bamboo
[After I've turned them to Shape/Size]

Holes done with Holesaws; to start with.

The boards are actually made of bits of bamboo milled rectangular in section about 6mm x 15mm and glued together and milled like any other bit of timber.

The laminations can be either vertical or horizontal to give a different pattern. A very clean, very hard surface results and almost no movement.

I had a bit in a bucket of water for two months to see what humidity did to it (!). No delamination, almost zero expansion (barely measurable with a micrometer over 90mm) , but some lovely black fungus growing on it.

I would gladly have used it on the floor at home, but it was a tad expensive at the time and I couldn't find anyone with experience in laying it.

    Cheers,

    P

My cousin has some bamboo flooring in his house five years now. Hard as hell, looks great and costs a motza.

I made 'Bamboo Dragonflies', an old chinese propeller toy for years out of bamboo. It is great material. There were plenty of thick walled pieces but never a solid piece. If you are going to work with it the age of the actual piece is very important. First year shoots are like cardboard,(brillian green, alternate branch buds) the next year they are like chipboard(branches extended, in full leaf), third year they are useful(leaves beginning to be ragged), fourth year(lower branches dying off) they are hard and at maximum strength and then they die off. If you search you may find the bamboo joining system designed by the famous architect Renzo Piano. and always remember the old chinese saying "without bamboo and pigs there can be no civilization because pigs make you fat and happy and bamboo makes you civilized." There are some great patches of giant bamboo all the way up the coast from Sydney to Cairns. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back out and find some.

Ivan, do not buy an ELU. They are hard to get parts for. Bits were made strictly to suit that lathe and fit nothing else.

    Didn't need to hear that,

I'm looking at a VETY cheap Lathe to start with.

Is that for ALL Elu, or just the Lathe?
I have some other Elu and IS GOOD!!

    Yes, Parts are a problem.
But have been able to make up what's needed so far.

Just the lathe. They used to make excellent tools.
