Battens
I have 18 x 3 meter timber batten screening to do on house. I am unsure the best and most economical way to do this as far as what timber to use. The complete batten screen will be painted black so natural appearance of timer does not really matter.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I use 40x 18 hardwood which has a rounded over edge profile and put one stainless decking screw in them into treated pine framing, stain or paint the edge of the framework first and it comes up a treat.

Depending on the look your are going for, a decking board - either full width or preferable ripped into two with a space in between would be relatively cost effective. If you wanted more of a batten 42x35 treated pine / LOSP would work.
If you are going hardwood and want black, check out my recent review on Porters Palm Beach Black in the review section of the forum. Certainly easier than painting and looks great. Cannot be used in treated timber according to the manufacturer.
It’s a decent length / height and would use a considerable amount of timber - shop around for pack quantities.

Was think of this option also Bunnings has a 32 x 32 treated pine batten that may work as well as well. Will take a look at Porters Palm Beach Black.
Thanks for the post

Good advice; but I woud go further than RB and suggest that you paint everything before you erect it. Far easier. Say two coats, then after erection touch up any fresh cuts, dings, etc, and then apply the final "display coat".
Do not know your local market, but you will probably find merbau and treated pine to be most economical.
