    Question What is beech?

I just purchased a bundle of planks which the demo. guy
said were "beech". As I understand it there is no beech native
to Australia so what could this be? It looks suspiciously like
Tassie "oak" to me. Any ideas from the experts?
    Cheers,

As far as I know, there is a timber called Qld beech. Light in colour. European beech is usually steamed and has a pinkish hue to it.

"Aussie beech" is pretty well like " tassie oak" what ever happens to be lyin' around that the salesdude can't name at the time
Actually is trade name for similar coloured and featured hardwoods, I believe a northern NSW company started the "Aussie Beech" nomenclature off.

The white beech is a very nice tight grained wood for cabinets turning and carving..i have seen in at mainstream timber suppliers...around sth east qld

once agin its seems a kind of generic name based on European or uS species sold as a processed timber under that name, any species that is similar may alos be included even tho not a true beech..

one of my favourite trees is the old Anarctic beech in the border ranges national park..very old, multiple trunks and major ganrly knobbs and burls..

    great trees...

    enjoy the wood mate

    Default What is beech?

Thank you, Reeves,et al. I think I'll go with Qld beech for the customer's
satisfaction as "white" beech may be a little confusing given the
    colour of this sample.

White beech as I know it is not exactly white ( I would call it a greyish sand colour), I have seen examples of it which has had dark streaks running throughout , there is also a timber imported from the Solomons called WBeech as well and it has the colour of butter .Both are nice to carve and work with in general .

If you plane it and it has an oily feel to it, chances are good that is Beech, AUST or from FIJI (plantation). if it is it is great for carving and boat decks.

Just beware of Euro Beech dust - one of the worst for nasal cancer.

    Default Beech

May be Wau beech from New Guinea, if it is it should be fairly soft, it could potentially be Gmelina - great timber
Send me a piece I can identify it for a small fee!
    Cheers!
