Beginner Question - Cheap Timber
Hello,
I am just getting started out with woodworking and wondering where is the best place to find cheap(er) pine or other softwoods to work with? I am based in Brisbane.
I looked at Bunnings and the prices seem very high. I am trying to build some saw horses ala Paul Sellers and it seems like you pay a lot of dressed 4 x 2s?
Any help and assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

One can always try Gumtree and find people throwing away timber after a reno. Or some free pallets which you could pull apart and use.

My tale of cheap wood.
When we were expecting our first I decided to make the cot. Not having much money I decided to buy cheap (seconds) wood from a salvage yard. Only when I got it home did I realise why it was cheap. It was ever so slight, bent, twisted, cupped and warped. I persisted and remade a couple of the sides of the cot, the I even tried re-sawing some of the bigger pieces, before I gave up and went and bought some straight flat timber.
Now of course I look more closely at the timber but if you want something decent you do have to pay money or mill your own.

Timber.
Hi There,
Well you went to Bunny's, but not to the Salvage Yard.
You have to ask to get there, & wear their green coat.
You will be supervised as well, but that is nothing.
Please & Thank You go a long way.
Sometimes when I have asked for a particular size, The Team will go seek & return with some on the Forklift.
You will need 2 Hammers, Claw & 4lb, Good roughy Hand Saw, Pinch Bar & Gloves.
There is some really good stuff if you source it properly.
Just watch out for hidden Nails, Staples & Stones.
Go For It ???.

issatree.
