Black Heart Sassafras
Hi
I was wondering if it would bbe a good idea to make an Electric Bass Guitar out of Black Heart sassafras.
So I'm asking if anyone knows if Black Heart Sassafras has the same or close enough density as Ash and Alder.
Thanks
Bobish

Hi Bobish
From my experiance with BH Sass, it is a very stable timber, with a good tight grain. Machines easy, easy to finish.
As to compareing it to Ash and Alder, bit hard to say as I havent used either of them.

Thanks
I'm really keen to make a Bass body out of BH Sass because I really like the look of it, so I hope it's everything I want it to be.
Does BH Sass split or crack while you are working with it or is that what you ment by stable.
Also is it a Hard wood or a Medium Density wood because I've been told both in my research.

Its not as dense as some timber ie Redgum, Ironbark.
I would put it in the medium density of Oz timbers.
I dont think youll have any problems with splitting, as long as the timber is seasoned properly.

Sassafras Technical Details
Bobish,
Head to the Tasmanian Timber website maintained by the University of Tasmania http://www.tastimber.tas.gov.au/spec...ssafras_02.asp for further details.
I have supplied Sassy for electric guitar bodies previously and seen various black heart sassafras models produced in recent years.

yes, maton used to use it for a lot of their electric basses.
Check on their website at
www.maton.com.au
if u look up the model numbers, they have a listing of woods used.
like this one in solid saassafras
http://www.maton.com.au/mainpage.asp...ode=MGB4%20(88)
They have used alot of australian woods.
