Default Black Heart Sassafras contrasting timbers

Looking for suggestions for Black Heart Sassafras contrasting complimentary timbers.

What I mean by this is if the Black Heart Sassafras is predominately a cream to pale yellow then the contrasting timber to be complimentary would want to pick up and match to the darker brown/black made by the fungus.

Maybe a walnut or ebony would be good?

I don't wish to offend anyone but I have seen items where pinky-red timbers were used with Black Heart Sassafras and I think it looks awful the tones the reds and browns clash. Personal opinion here of course and each to their own.

So suggestions with brown/black contrasting complimentary timbers?
    Photos greatly welcomed.

Blackwood? Or if you want some really black details you could ebonise some tassie oak.

How do you ebonise timber? Do you stain it or is there some process?

I've found rosewood and queen ebony to match nicely with the darker parts of the wood

I have found that I can get a real black black by layering the stains. Black stain then liquid night mare ( which is an old fashioned brew of iron [from a pot scorer} dissolved in vinegar. just rub on and it reacts with tannin in the wood. )

I'd go for ebony or black timber

Steel wool, vinegar and some old tea leaves for tannins - leave for a day or so then strain and paint on, wood should go black as it dries, apply more coats as necessary

I might just try that on a piece of scrap to test the practice. So much to learn.

    Hi there

We have made some beautiful BH sassy dining tables in the past, using a tas oak/ vic ash base stained with several coats of Japan Black. I does not end up pure black but rather a deep brown/black similar to the tones of the sassy. Sorry, no photo's, but the customers loved them.

    Cheers

    James.
