I finished up some Cocos palm that Ogato kindly sent me. It stabilized very nicely.
I used a face-cutter in the mill to square up the block. I noticed the edges still tended to chip out a little bit but not too badly following the stabilizing .
The block is noticeably heavy and much, much harder. After milling I gave it a quick sand on the disc to 400g (although certainly not a good 400 finish).

It's a very nice looking timber and am confident it'll do a good job as knife handle ... Just got to stop playing with timber and make some blades.
Thanks for the blocks Ogato.
I also have some different palm from Mobyturns, which went into the chamber today. Of course the seal went 15 mins later so I'll fix that tomorrow arvo and see how that goes. I'll be sending him done back do hopefully we hear how it turns on the lathe.

Looking good so far Matt, what is the further process/s and timeframe to the finished product?
I tried turning a piece too, between centres and made a round handle-ish shape, about 150 long and 27 diam. Looked OK I suppose, but not sure what I'm going to do with it . . . Easy to turn, not particularly smooth off the chisel and required a bit of sanding. I've finished this piece with a couple of coats of Kunos.

Jeff, the stabilizing process takes about a day for timbers that easily take up the resin like palm. Some of the hardwood burls can take multiple days to get all the air out. Once impregnated with the resin it's baked for about 2 hours. I have to bring the oven temp up slowly so I don't go over as it's a bench top toaster oven and not very accurate. Cleaning up takes about 15mins on the mill and disc sander.
I have two chambers so could do about 25-30 palm blocks like you sent me in a day.
Just took me a while to do as I had a few other things on and lent my stabilizer kit to a mate for a few weeks.

Sorry, think I misunderstood the question.
To finished product I need to finish a knife. Likely a hidden tang as I don't do many full tang knives.
I need to drill out a slot and the shape appropriately for the tang. Then shape the handle to near finished dimensions.
Handle is then fitted, glued with epoxy and pinned or bolted. Final shaping and then an appropriate finish. My preference is furniture waxes as they can be easily re-applied and give a more grippy feel than poly finishes.

Where can I get Black Palm?
For anyone that is interested here is a knife I finished with some of the Palm from Mobyturns. It polished up great and was nice and solid. Sorry for the not so great pic but the only photo I had time for before it sold.
Yet to try the stuff from ogato.

I'm glad it worked out for you, it looks great as an accent. Yet to turn the stabilized blanks you sent back for me.

Beautiful knife but I would worry about using palm for a buried tang, to much chance of it splitting even when stabilised, especially for such a large cutting/chopping knife.
