Wanted: Black timber for stringing
I am looking for ebony or African Blackwood, or similar, for use as stringing. Longer lengths preferred, and Oz based.
Anyone selling?

Luke, Gidgee looks wonderful, but for other purposes. The specific need requires it to be black.
Neil, 500mm long x 150mm wide x 25mm high would be great.

Hi Ian
I actually need pieces about 400mm long. I know I can join shorter sections, but it I can let a longer piece, for future use, that would be helpful.
Neil, are you coming back to me?

Hi Derek
I was more commenting on the size of the piece of stringing you were after.
150 x 25 is a very serious piece of "stringing" -- especially if what you really need is a piece that will finish around 3 x 4 mmregards from Alberta, Canada

I have some old Queen Ebony (very black) that is over 400mm long, but nothing like 150x25, if I did you couldn't afford it
I'm not sure what the string thing you are making is?
If you just want black, why not use some Eucalypt or Acacia and ebonise it (I use steel wool/vinegar/tea bag mix)? My resin/burl spheres all have ebonised stands from BlackwoodNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Hi Derek,
Luthier’s supplies may be able to help. In length anyway, but probably not 150x25:

if you are happy to have ready-cut ebony stringing Graeme Brown in Melbourne used to carry this at 1.5, 1.8, 2.7 and 3.4.
Graeme Brown Antiques
Trend Timbers in Sydney also show as carrying:
73 Ebony Black ( Diospyros ebenum [India/Sri Lanka] )

I’d be interested to know if you find a good source.

Thanks Brian and Neil
I really do not need the large chunk I mentioned earlier ... just thought I'd stock up Obviously I have no clue about the cost involved!
I'll have a look at those sites next.

Derek,
Have you tried the Perth Carbatec? It wasn’t cheap but the Brisbane store had some African Blackwood back in 2016. At the prices they offered it, I’d guess it’s still in there...
I think you’ll find it but if you come up short, send me a PM and I can source it for you up here pretty easily.

Another option is heartwood from old growth Queensland Walnut (Endiandra palmerstonii). It can be a very rich dark chocolate to almost black.

Inland Rosewood (Acacia rhodoxylon) is also an option; not quite black, but it gets pretty dark. It's about as hard as ebony as well.

Thanks Luke. The local Perth Carbatec only stock turning blanks. About 10 years ago, before they moved to new premises (literally over the road), they had a wonderful array of timbers for sale.
After a brain wave, I Googled “wood stringing” and found this site: Stringing - Veneer Inlay.
My thanks for the kind offer, but it may be easier to just get what I need this way.

Derek,
No ebony from that supplier, though.
Best regards,
Brian
